The Maryland women's swimming and diving team completed the first day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational tonight with finals in the 500-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, men's 1 meter diving, and women's 3 meter diving. The 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay also took place this evening. The Maryland women's team is currently in third place behind West Virginia University in second and University of Kansas in the lead.
Finals opened with the 200 freestyle relay. On the women's side, the relay team of sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan), junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel), freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) came in third place (1:34.74).
Lehner swam in the finals of the 500 freestyle, notching a third-place finish (4:55.14) after swimming to a season-high time in the prelims of the event (4:54.94).
The Terps had four girls advance to finals in the 200 IM. Freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) was the top finisher for Maryland in 10th place (2:06.02) followed by junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) in 13th (2:08.61), freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) in 16th (2:09.68) and junior Julie O'Brien (Demascus, Md.) in 22nd (2:09.44).
In the 50 free, both Skalinskaya and Finkler swam to season-high times with Skalinskaya placing fifth (23.78) and Finkler in 12th (23.90).
In the 400 medley relay, the team of Lehner, Rossi, freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.), and Skalinskaya placed sixth with a time of 3:52.20.
The second day of competition will begin tomorrow morning at 10:00 am with the preliminary session of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and women's 1 meter diving.
