Final Stats

NORFOLK, Va. - The Maryland Terrapins (11-16) fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs, 4-1, on Wednesday night at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. Right-hander Ross Fetterly (1-0) earned the win for ODU, which won its 15th straight game, allowing one run on six hits over 6.0 innings in his first career start. For the Terps, first baseman Gerry Spessard went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Dan Melvin finished 1-for-3 with a walk.

Lefty Casey Baron (0-2) started on the mound for Maryland, allowing six hits and three runs, only one of which was earned, in 4.1 innings. Senior Seth Overbey pitched 2.2 innings in long relief for the Terps, yielding an unearned run on one hit while striking out a career-high five hitters.

Maryland took an early lead in the top of the first. Matt Maropis singled to center on the first pitch of the game and moved into scoring position on a base hit by center fielder Nick Jowers. Spessard brought the run in on the Terps' third consecutive single to start the game, putting Maryland up, 1-0.

The lead didn't last long, however, as ODU scored twice in the bottom of the frame to take a one-run advantage. After reaching on an error, Chris Keenan scored on a two-out double by first baseman Bryan Cipolla. Baron yielded another unearned run on a single to center as the Monarchs went up, 2-1.

Catcher Tyler Belcher put the Monarchs ahead by two on an RBI single to left in the bottom of the third. ODU was in position to add to its lead again in the fifth, but Overbey came in with a man on second and struck out the next two Monarch hitters to squelch the threat.

Maryland had an opportunity to attack the ODU lead in the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter Wink Nolan drew a leadoff walk and a double off the bat of third baseman Mike Murphy gave the Terps men in scoring position with none down. But the Monarch bullpen got the next three hitters out on a shallow fly ball and a pair of strikeouts as Maryland came away empty-handed.

ODU tacked on one more in the bottom of the inning on three Terp errors to go up, 4-1.

Maryland will play host to Georgia Tech in a three-game set this weekend at Shipley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
