Women's Soccer Kicks Off 2006 With #14 Tennesee And #2 UCLA At Penn State Classic

Aug. 23, 2006

College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapin women's soccer team begins the 2006 season in University Park, Pa., at the Penn State Classic with a pair of matches against preseason Top 15 teams. The Terps kick off their '06 campaign on Friday, August 25, with a 5:00 p.m. game vs. No. 14 Tennessee. The Terps then face No. 2 UCLA on Sunday, August 27, at 12 Noon.

Scouting The Vols
• The Lady Volunteers finished the 2005 season with a 15-6-2 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's second round. Tennessee, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Angela Kelly, returns nine starters. The Volunteers have played two preseason exhibitions prior to meeting the Terps, winning 4-3 over Virginia Tech and 2-1 over Carson-Newman.

• Tennessee will be led by M.A.C. Hermann Trophy candidate Ali Christopher, who scored five goals and added three assists for the Lady Vols in 2005.

Scouting The Bruins
• Head coach Jillian Ellis brings her UCLA team to the Penn State Classic for a rematch with the Terps from the 2004 Cavalier Classic. The Bruins are coming off of a 22-2-2 season which saw them advance to the NCAA College Cup finals for the second consecutive season. Ellis, an assistant coach at Maryland from 1993-96, is in her eighth year at the helm of the Bruin program and has compiled a 132-27-7 record. Overall in nine years as a head coach she is 151-45-7.

• UCLA boasts two M.A.C. Hermann candidates in junior forward Danesha Adams and junior goalkeeper Valerie Henderson. Adams scored 21 goals and added four assists last season, while Henderson allowed just 12 goals in 25 games for a 0.53 GAA.

A Quick Look At The Preseason
• The Terps played just one game during the preseason, defeating Richmond, 2-0, on August 20.

• Maryland was impressive vs. the Spiders with junior forward Kelly Rozumalski netting both Terrapin goals with an assist on each score going to freshman midfielder Molly Dreska. Rozumalski's first score came in the 19th minute when she took a pass from Dreska and feathered a shot into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out to give the Terps a 1-0 lead. That duo would hook up again in the 77th minute to cap off the scoring and give Maryland the 2-0 victory. Dreska sent a low cross to Rozumalski, who slid and stuck the ball past Richmond keeper Kate Hudson.

• Senior All-ACC goalkeeper Nikki Resnick only had to make two saves for the Terps because the Maryland defense allowed Richmond just four shots in the match.

The Maryland-Tennessee Series
• This will be just the second meeting between the Terps and the Lady Vols with Maryland holding a 1-0 series lead.

• The Terrapins defeated then-No. 23 Tennessee, 3-1, in 2003 in College Park at the Maryland/adidas Classic. No current Terps saw action in that victory.

The Maryland-UCLA Series
• This will be just the third meeting between the Terps and the Bruins with the series tied at one win apiece.

• The two teams first locked horns in 1999 with UCLA earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory with a goal from Tracey Winzen in the second minute of stoppage time in the second half.

• The Terrapins avenged that defeat with a 2-1 upset of then-No. 3 UCLA at the Virginia Soccer Classic in 2004. Rozumalski, just a freshman in her fifth college game, scored her second career goal in the seventh minute of play, converting on a breakaway to give Maryland a 1-0 lead. The Terps took a 2-0 lead on Kimmy Francis' breakaway goal in the 40th minute of play. The Bruins' got on the board with a goal from Danesha Adams in the 65th minute, but Maryland would hang on for the victory with Resnick making eight saves in net for the Terps.

Playing The Best
• Once again in 2006, Maryland will play one of toughest schedules in the nation.

• The Terps take on eight teams ranked in the preseason NSCAA poll including four of the top eight teams. The Terps face No. 2 UCLA (Aug. 27) and No. 14 Tennessee (Aug. 25) at the Penn State Classic, at No. 4 North Carolina (Oct. 1), host No. 6 Florida State (Oct. 5), host No. 8 Virginia (Oct. 22), at No. 10 Boston College (Oct. 27), host No. 12 Duke (Oct. 14) amd at No. 23 Wake Forest (Sept. 28).

Beating The Best
• During six of the past seven seasons, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2002. The Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field. The Terps extended that streak in 2005 with a 2-1 upset of No. 8 Boston College on Oct. 29 at Ludwig Field.

Playing Overtime
• Maryland played six overtime games in 2005, tying for the second most in team history with the 1988 team. That '88 squad was 1-3-2 in those six games, while the 2005 Terrapins were 1-2-3.

• The record for most overtime games in a single season belongs to the 2004 Maryland team, which played in eight overtime contests (2-2-4).
