The USA Field Hockey Association recently announced the 2006 World Cup team, which includes former Terrapins Lauren Powley, Dina Rizzo, Sara Silvetti and Keli Smith. The four selections ties for the most for one school
The selections come after the USA hosted the AstroTurf March on Madrid Four Nation Tournament, which featured three of the top teams in the world and the United States, who is ranked No. 12. At the tournament, the US picked up its first win in 16 years over No. 2 Argentina in a game that was hosted by the University of Maryland.
Powley `05 (Mountaintop, Pa.), Rizzo `02 (Walpole, Mass.), Silvetti `04 (Wapwallopen, Pa.) and Smith '00 (Selinsgrove, Pa.) have been integral members of the US team in recent years. Rizzo is the most veteran of the group, earning 75 international caps, while Smith has picked up 72 caps. Silvetti joined the team after finished her career in College Park in the summer of 2004 and Powley, who had played with several of the junior teams since 2000, earned a spot on the full national team in 2005 before leading the Terps to the 2005 NCAA Championship.
The World Cup takes place in Madrid, Spain, Sept. 27-Oct. 8. The Americans will be looking for another upset as they open pool play vs. Argentina.
