University of Maryland women's soccer freshman Emily Maynard has been named to Soccer America's Team of the Week after scoring the lone goal in the Terps' 1-0 upset of No. 10 Tennessee on August 25 at the Penn State Classic.
Maynard will be the guest on the season's first edition of "The Brian Pensky Show", which airs weekly on WMUC every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Fans can listen to the show at wmucsports.com
Maynard's goal came off a play that began in Maryland's defensive third where freshman defender Brittany Cummins sent a pass from the right back position over Tennessee's back four to the far side of the left wing. Lady Vols goalkeeper Jamile Johnson was off her line in goal for Tennessee, but Maynard raced in from her left outside midfield spot and beat the keeper to the ball. The freshman from Munster, Ind., was able to punch the ball over the keeper with her laces from 35 yards out for her first collegiate goal on what proved to be Maryland's only shot of the second half.
Maynard and the rest of the 25th-ranked Maryland women's soccer team returns to action on Friday September 1 when they take on in-state rival Towson at Ludwig Field in the Terps' 2006 home opener at 5:00 p.m. That match is the first game of a women's-men's soccer doubleheader, as the top-ranked Maryland men's soccer team hosts No. 10 UCLA at 8:00 p.m. Both games will also be televised nationally on CSTV.
Tickets for the doubleheader are priced at $7 for adults and $4 for youth (17 and under) and seniors, and can be purchased on-line at umterps.com, at the Comcast Center ticket office, or by calling the ticket office toll-free at 1-800-IM-A-TERP. All seating is general admission. A limited number of standing-room-only areas will be available once all permanent seats are occupied.
