Sept. 11, 2006

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapin women's soccer team hosts Loyola on Tuesday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field.

Scouting The Greyhounds
• Loyola is 0-3-1 on the season and have been outscored 9-2 in those four games.

• The Greyhounds played their first three games of the season in Tempe, Ariz. They started with a 2-0 loss at Arizona State on Aug. 28. Loyola then played a pair of matches in the Heather Falls KICKS Against Breast Cancer Tournament. In the tournament opener, the Greyhounds dropped a 4-1 decision to St. Louis on Sept. 1. That loss was follwed by a 3-1 defeat to top-ranked Florida State on Sept. 3.

• Loyola fought to a 0-0 tie at Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 8.

• Coach John Byford is in his second season at the helm of the Greyhound program. He has an overall career record of 28-29-1 in four years as a head coach. At Loyola his record stands at 15-8-0. In 2005, his first season at Loyola, Byford led the Hounds to a 15-5-0 record, including a perfect 9-0-0 mark in the MAAC.

A Quick Look At The Terps
• Maryland is 2-2-1 after a successful two-game homestand that had to be altered due to the effects of heavy rains associated with tropical depression Ernesto and a difficult 1-0 loss at Dartmouth.

• In the 2006 home opener, Maryland was frustrated for the second-straight season by Towson. The game ended in a 0-0 tie despite the Terps holding a 30-11 advantage in shots. The scoreless tie extended Maryland's scoring drought to 217 minutes dating back to the 73rd minute of the season opener.

• That scoring drought didn't last much longer as the Terps broke through with a 6-0 rout of UMBC. Junior midfielder Melissa Hornfeck (right) scored twice and added an assist against the Retrievers. Hornfeck's five points against UMBC marked the first time since Oct. 1, 2003 that a Terrapin has tallied five points in a game. Senior midfielder Sarah Sample, junior forward Kelly Rozumalski and freshman midfielder Emily Maynard each had a goal and an assist for Maryland. Redshirt-sophomore defender Lauren Gamble scored the first goal of her career. Stevie Dunning, Molly Dreska and Amanda Paizs each picked up an assist in the victory.

• The Terps traveled to Dartmouth on Sept. 8 and were delt a 1-0 loss by the Big Green. Senior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick kept Maryland in the game by tying her career high with 14 saves.

The Maryland-Loyola Series
• This will be the tenth meeting between the Terps and the Greyhounds with the Terps having won all nine previous matches.

• The series began in 1987, the first season of Terrapin women's soccer, with a 7-1 Maryland win.

• The last meeting between the two schools came in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The Terps won a 3-0 shutout of the Greyhounds at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. Two current Terps figured in the scoring during that game with Nataly Arias assisting on Mallory Mahar's goal and Kelly Rozumalski scored her first NCAA Tournament goal in the 53rd minute to give Maryland a 2-0 lead.

• Also in that 2004 tournament game, goalkeeper Nikki Resnick needed to make just three saves as the Maryland defense limited the Hounds to just seven total shots.

• Other current Terps to see action against Loyola in 2004 were midfielders Stevie Dunning and Shelley McDuff.

• The two teams were scheduled to meet in the 2004 regular season, but that game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

At Ludwig Field
• Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women's soccer team. All-time Maryland is 78-32-10 (.692) at Ludwig Field.

• Through the seasons, the Terps have had a knack for shutting teams out at Ludwig Field. Maryland has won 52 of its 78 games (67%) at Ludwig Field via shutout. Add in the six 0-0 ties the Terps have had at Ludwig Field and it totals 58 times that Maryland has shutout its opponent in 120 games (48.3%).

• All-time in ACC games at Ludwig Field the Terrapins are 20-16-6 (.548).

• In a 4-0 loss to No. 1 North Carolina last season, goalkeeper Nikki Resnick broke Riki-Ann Serrins five-year old record for saves in a game with 14 vs. the Tar Heels.

Playing The Best
• Once again in 2006, Maryland will play one of toughest schedules in the nation.

• The Terps take on eight teams ranked in the preseason NSCAA poll including four of the top eight teams. The Terps face No. 2 UCLA (L, 0-3/Aug. 27) and No. 14 Tennessee (W, 1-0/Aug. 25) at the Penn State Classic, at No. 4 North Carolina (Oct. 1), host No. 6 Florida State (Oct. 5), host No. 8 Virginia (Oct. 22), at No. 10 Boston College (Oct. 27), host No. 12 Duke (Oct. 14) amd at No. 23 Wake Forest (Sept. 28).

Beating The Best
• During seven of the past eight seasons, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2002. The Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field. The Terps extended that streak in 2005 with a 2-1 upset of No. 8 Boston College on Oct. 29 at Ludwig Field. Jeffrey Field proved lucky for the Terps again in the 2006 season opener as they knocked off No. 10 Tennessee 1-0 at the Penn State Classic on Aug. 25.

Playing Overtime
• The Terps are no strangers to playing extra minutes. Since 2004, when the current Terps started at Maryland, the Terrapins have played in 15 overtime contests - going 3-4-8 (.467). So far this season Maryland has played in one OT game, a 0-0 tie with Towson on Sept. 2.

• Maryland played six overtime games in 2005, tying for the second most in team history with the 1988 team. That '88 squad was 1-3-2 in those six games, while the 2005 Terrapins were 1-2-3.

• The record for most overtime games in a single season belongs to the 2004 Maryland team, which played in eight overtime contests (2-2-4).

Game No. 400
• The first-ever meeting between Stony Brook and Maryland will have historical significance. That match will be the 400th women's soccer game in the 20-year history of the program.
