COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
After finishing up its non-conference portion of the schedule this past weekend, the Maryland Terrapin women's soccer team begins ACC play by hosting the Clemson Tigers on Thursday, September 21. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Ludwig Field.
Fans will be able to listen to the games by logging on to wmucsports.com or they can follow the games on GameTracker, which is available on UMTerps.com.
Scouting the Tigers
Clemson is 4-3 on the season after dropping its final non-conference tune-up, 1-0, at South Carolina last Friday. The Tigers' seven opponents so far in 2006 have a combined win-loss record of 23-25-5 (481). For comparison, the Terps' 2006 opponents thus far have a combined win-loss record of 27-22-7 (.545).
Clemson is led by sophomore Meghan Smith, who has three goals and an assist so far in 2006. Smith is in her first season at Clemson after transferring in from Iowa State. Freshman Molly Franklin is second on the team with six points on two goals and two assists.
Defensively, the Tigers have allowed only seven goals in seven games. The Tiger defense is anchored by goalkeeper Ashley Phillips, who was a second team All-ACC selection in 2006. Phillips has a 1.04 GAA so far this season and has made 31 saves, which is third-most among ACC keepers.
The Tigers are coming off of a 2005 season that saw them compile a 9-9-2 record, including a 4-5-1 mark in ACC play (6th). Clemson returns seven starters from that squad that earned an NCAA Tournament bid.
Head Coach Todd Bramble is in his sixth season at the helm of the Tiger program and has a record of 63-40-7 (.605). He has never defeated the Terps in five career meetings (0-5-1).
The Maryland-Clemson Series
Maryland and Clemson have a history of playing tight games including last season's 0-0 tie at Riggs Field on Sept. 22, 2005. Overall, Maryland leads the series 9-6-1, but Clemson holds a slim 19-17 scoring advantage in the 16 games. Nine of the last 12 games in the series have been one-goal affairs. Maryland is 6-0 all-time vs. the Tigers at home, all of which have been played at Ludwig Field.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools at Ludwig Field since the Terps upset the 24th-ranked Tigers in 2003. The last two games, a 1-0 Maryland win in 2004 and the 0-0 tie last season, have been played at Clemson's Historic Riggs Field.
In the 2004 game, the Terps held on for a 1-0 victory over the Tigers at Riggs Field. Nikki Resnick proved to be the difference in goal for the Terps, making six saves.
The last match between the two teams in College Park was another close affair as the Terrapins jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Mallory Mahar trickling a header past the Tiger goalkeeper for the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute. Clemson added a goal in the 63rd minute to make the final 2-1.
A Quick Look At The Terps
Maryland finished its non-conference schedule with a 4-3-1 record after winning its last two games before the ACC schedule begins.
Nikki Resnick recorded her fifth shutout of the season as Maryland defeated George Mason, 1-0, on the road on Sept. 17. Kelly Rozumalski scored the game winner with assists going to Sarah Sample and Molly Dreska on the play.
In their last game at Ludwig Field the Terps ended a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over Stony Brook on Sept. 15. Maureen Dowling and Kaila Sciascia each picked up their first collegiate goals in defeating the Seawolves.
Resnick Tops In ACC
Senior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick , a native of Boca Raton, Fla., is leading the ACC in saves per game (6.12). For the season Resnick has made 49 saves in eight games.
Resnick is second among ACC keepers in save percentage, stopping 49 of 54 shots on goal (90.7%). She is also seventh in the conference with a 0.64 GAA.
Resnick Shutting Out The ACC
Nikki Resnick is second in career shutouts at Maryland with 15, but six of those shutouts have come against ACC opponents, including three ranked among the Top 11 in the nation at the time. Two of those shutouts have come against Clemson - a 1-0 win in 2004 and a 0-0 tie last year.
At Ludwig Field
Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women's soccer team. All-time Maryland is 79-33-10 (.689) at Ludwig Field.
Through the seasons, the Terps have had a knack for shutting teams out at Ludwig Field. Maryland has won 53 of its 79 games (67%) at Ludwig Field via shutout. Add in the six 0-0 ties the Terps have had at Ludwig Field and it totals 59 times that Maryland has shutout its opponent in 122 games (48.4%).
All-time in ACC games at Ludwig Field the Terrapins are 20-16-6 (.548).
In a 4-0 loss to No. 1 North Carolina last season, goalkeeper Nikki Resnick broke Riki-Ann Serrins five-year old record for saves in a game at Ludwig Field with 14 vs. the Tar Heels.
All-Time vs. The ACC
The Terps have an all-time record of 33-70-10 (.336) in regular season ACC play.
Playing The Best
Once again in 2006, Maryland will play one of toughest schedules in the nation.
The Terps take on six teams ranked in the latest NSCAA poll including five of the top 10 teams. The Terps have faced No. 3 UCLA (L, 0-3/Aug. 27) and No. 8 Tennessee (W, 1-0/Aug. 25) at the Penn State Classic. They will host No. 2 Florida State (Oct. 5) and No. 21 Virginia (Oct. 22). Maryland will also travel to No. 4 North Carolina (Oct. 1) and No. 10 Wake Forest (Sept. 28). The Terps will also host Duke (Oct. 14), which was ranked in the preseason and is currently receiving votes.
Beating The Best
During seven of the past eight seasons, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2002. The Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field. The Terps extended that streak in 2005 with a 2-1 upset of No. 8 Boston College on Oct. 29 at Ludwig Field. Jeffrey Field proved lucky for the Terps again in the 2006 season opener as they knocked off No. 10 Tennessee 1-0 at the Penn State Classic on Aug. 25.
Playing Overtime
The Terps are no strangers to playing extra minutes. Since 2004, when the current Terps started at Maryland, the Terrapins have played in 15 overtime contests - going 3-4-8 (.467). So far this season Maryland has played in one OT game, a 0-0 tie with Towson on Sept. 2.
Maryland played six overtime games in 2005, tying for the second most in team history with the 1988 team. That '88 squad was 1-3-2 in those six games, while the 2005 Terrapins were 1-2-3.
The record for most overtime games in a single season belongs to the 2004 Maryland team, which played in eight overtime contests (2-2-4).
