Day 3 Results

Final Overall Results

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's swimming and diving program placed second in the Terrapin Cup Invitational with a combined total of 609 points.

"Overall, I thought we swam really fast," commented Interim Head Coach Jarod Schroeder. "It was very exciting to come back tonight and swim with that intensity."

UConn placed ahead of the Terps with 700 points. Maryland placed in front of seven other teams including William & Mary (585), Richmond (514.5), Villanova (462), Navy 320, West Chester (315), Drexel (237.5) and Mary Washington (110).

Maryland's third and final day at the invitational began in the 1650-yard freestyle. Freshman Erin Holmes took 10th place in the finals competition, swimming with a final time of 17:26.68. Maryland now had a combined 431 points in the second seed, behind UConn (489).

In the 200-yard backstroke, Holmes placed sixth with a final time of 2:05.12, picking up 13 points. Sophomore Jackie Davidson also scored for the Terps, finishing 9th with a time of 2:03.68.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Sophomore Katie Radloff of William & Mary broke a pool record, swimming to a first place finish with an NCAA A-cut time of 49.30. The previous record was 49.46 set by Carrie Ellis of Florida State in 2006.

Maryland also had impressive finishes in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Annie Fittin finished 5th for the Terps with a time of 51.77. Junior Yelena Skalinskaya (51.79), senior captain Emily Smoak (51.85), senior Maya Finkler (52.09) and freshman Blair Cross (52.59) finished 9th, 10th, 11th and 14th, respectively. Maryland added a total of 39 points for a combined 492 in the second slot.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Freshman Stephanie Parker placed 11th with a time of 2:25.43 to add six points to Maryland's score.

Maryland had four place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophomore Jen Vogel finished first with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:01.24, picking up 20 points for the Terps. Sophomore Nina Rossi finished 3rd with a time of 2:04.52 while sophomore Patty DeScenza swam to a 5th place finish with a time of 2:05.38. Freshman Laura Jojic had a 13th finish with a time of 2:09.49. Maryland scored a 54 in the event with a combined total of 555.

Smoak, Finkler, Davidson and Fittin took first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.17. Cross, Vogel, Skalinskaya and freshman Kathryn Snedeker placed 9th with a time of 3:29.18.

Lone diver freshman Montana Puente competed in the diving preliminaries for the Terrapins. Puente score a 158.55 in six dives, placing 15th in the diving preliminaries.

The Terps next meet will be January 6, 2008 when the team travels to Fort Pierce, Fla. to face Indian River Country Club.
