BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team scored nine of the first 10 second half goals in the first 9:23 as the Terrapins (14-2, 4-1 ACC) defeated Virginia Tech (5-11, 0-5 ACC), 21-17, on Sunday at the Virginia Tech Lacrosse Stadium. With the win, the Terps will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's ACC Tournament. Maryland will face the winner of No. 4 Virginia and No. 5 Boston College on Friday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Fetzer Field at the University of North Carolina.

Pellizzi ignited the Maryland offense in the second half as she scored four goals and assisted on another during the second half run. She finished the day with four goals and three assists. Junior Casey Magor had a career high five goals and classmate Dana Dobbie added three goals and two assists. Junior Katie Princiotto recorded a pair of goals and assists.

Maryland will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. It is the first time it will be the top seed since 2003.

Maryland's transition game got things going early for the Terps as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Maryland scored the first three goals of the game all coming from different scorers. Juniors Kelly Kasper, Katie Pumphrey, and Katie Princiotto all scored in the run. Pumphrey's fast break score was the first of her career.

Kady McBrearty found Lindsay Pieper for Virginia Tech's first goal of the game at the 21:34 mark but two more transition goals from junior Lauren Cohen and freshman Amanda Spinnenweber pushed the Terps' lead to 5-1 at the 16:34 mark.

The Hokies rallied back with five unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game, 6-5, with just over four minutes left in the first half. Rachel Culp scored twice during the stretch. Pieper started the run with a free position score, her second goal of the game.

The Terps put a stop to the run quickly after Virginia Tech's last goal as Cohen won the ensuing draw control. Cohen found Pellizzi in the middle of the field, and then Pellizzi dished off to Magor for the score to tie the game in nine seconds.

Maryland came out in the second half and scored five-straight goals to take an 11-6 lead with less than seven minutes expired. Pellizzi was the catalyst for the Terrapins has she scored three of those goals, two on free positions.

Pieper converted on a free position opportunity at 22:36 to cut the lead to 11-7, but Pellizzi connected again with an assist from Princiotto just 21 seconds later. The Terps added three more quick goals in less than two minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 15-7, with 20:37 left in the game.

The two teams would trade goals for the most part in the remaining time left. The closest the Hokies would get the rest of the way was a four-goal deficit, 21-17, with 22 seconds left in the game.

McBrearty scored four goals and two assists for the Hokies while Pieper had five goals and an assist. Culp added a hat trick and an assist.
