COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Senior outside hitter Beth Gillming has been given the Colonel Thomas M. Fields Award by the Terrapin Club in recognition of her academic and athletic accomplishments during her Maryland career.

The Fields Award is annually awarded by the Terrapin Club to the student athlete who best demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and athletic excellence over the past year. Two other volleyball players have received the award in the past 10 years - Shannon Saltzman in 1997 and Aimee Huddleston in 2004.

Gillming gave a brief speech at the award dinner in which she thanked Col. Fields, The Terrapin Club, and the entire Maryland community for her experience as a Maryland student-athlete.

"I would like to thank the Terrapin Club for all of their work in providing scholarships for people like myself, my teammates, my friends, and all 750 student-athletes competing for the University," she said. "Be assured that your support is much appreciated by coaches, fans, and most importantly the student-athletes who are competing and learning day in and day out."

A team captain this past season, Gillming ranked second on the team in 2006 in both kills (246) and digs (355) as an outside hitter. On October 27th of last year, Gillming became only the sixth Terrapin to reach the 1,000 career dig mark during a three game sweep of Miami. She is currently fifth on Maryland's all-time list in digs with 1137.

Gillming, a junior education major, was selected to the 2006 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Volleyball Team. It was the second consecutive season she was selected to the all conference academic team. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

"I firmly believe that we are both students and athletes and therefore, have very high expectations for myself, both on and off the court," Gillming said in her speech.

As a sophomore she notched 21 digs against Boston College, and turned in a dominating performance against Miami of Ohio setting a career-high with 17 kills, 21 digs, 43 attempts and seven blocks. This past season, in a five-game win over Georgia Tech on October 6, she totaled 15 kills and 12 digs to help key the Terp's victory.

For her career, she has 548 kills, 130 blocks and 95 service aces. She played on NCAA tournament teams in her freshman (2004) and sophomore (2005) seasons.

As a freshman in 2004, she performed spectacularly in ACC Tournament, setting a new tournament record for digs with 87 over four matches.
