Sept. 6, 2007
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland Terrapin women's soccer team hits the road for the first time in 2007 when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., for a pair of neutral-site games against two Los Angeles-based schools. The Terps open up the Hoosier Classic on Friday, Sept. 7, with a 4:30 p.m. game vs. No. 13 USC. The Terps then play Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m.
Did you know ... the last time the Maryland women's soccer team played a nationally ranked opponent on a neutral field it defeated No. 10 Tennessee, 1-0, at the 2006 Penn State Classic?
Scouting The Trojans
USC is off to a 2-0 start to the 2007 season under the direction of new head coach Ali Khosroshahin. The Women of Troy return nine starters from their 2006 squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
USC kicked off its 2007 season with a decisive 5-1 win that saw four freshmen contribute on the Trojans' first three goals. The Women of Troy followed that performance with a 2-0 shutout of UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 2. Freshman Megan Ohai leads USC in scoring with nine points on three goals in her first two collegiate games.
Did you know ... Maryland and USC have played twice previously with each team owning a 3-0 win over the other?
Scouting The Lions
Head coach Joe Mallia's Loyola Marymount team heads to the Hoosier Classic with a 0-2 record following two 1-0 during the season's opening weekend. The Lions return eight starters and 19 letterwinners from their 2006 team that earned a bid to the NCAA tournament.
LMU fell to UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, on Friday night in Mallia's coaching debut for the Lions. Loyola Marymount's luck did not improve vs. Dayton on Sunday when the Flyers scored the game's lone goal in the 108th minute for a 1-0 overtime win.
Did you know ... this will be the first ever meeting between the Terps and the Lions?
Playing Overtime
The 0-0 tie with Eastern Kentucky marked the third-straight home opener that has ended in a scoreless tie. In 2005 and 2006 the Terps played to a 0-0 draw against Towson.
Maryland played five overtime games last season, going 0-1-4 in those matches. All four ties ended in 0-0 finishes, tying the 2006 Michigan Wolverines for the most 0-0 ties in a season in NCAA history.
During the past four seasons, Maryland has played 21 overtime games with a record of 3-5-13 in those games.
Take a Shot
The 2007 season opener was one for the record books for the Terps. In the 0-0 tie with Eastern Kentucky, Maryland took a school record 55 shots. Nataly Arias led the Terps with 11 shots, while sohpomore Emily Maynard took eight.
Impact Freshmen
Through its first two games, Maryland has played seven freshmen, including three who have started matches.
Goalkeeper Yewande Balogun logged all 200 minutes for the Terps in their first two games and has a 0.45 GAA with one shutout to her credit.
Mallory Baker and Caitlin McDowell each picked up their first collegiate assists in the 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Baker started each of the first two games for Maryland, while McDowell earned the start vs. FDU.
Olivia Onyeador, who was hampered most of the preseason with an injury, saw late action against Eastern Kentucky as a forward. Against FDU she played more than 60 minutes as a wide defender.
Forwards Annesia Faulkner and Kylie Ricker and midfielder Erika Theisen each saw playing time during the first two matches.
Playing The Best
Once again in 2007, Maryland will play a challenging schedule.
The Terps take on seven teams ranked in this weeks NSCAA poll. The Terps play No. 6 North Carolina (Oct. 7), No. 9 Florida State (Oct. 11), No. 10 Boston College (Nov. 1), No. 11 Virginia (Oct. 25), No. 19 USC, No. 20 Clemson (Sept. 27) and No. 24 Wake Forest (Oct. 5).
Beating The Best
During seven of the past nine seasons, including 2007, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2002. The Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field. The Terps extended that streak in 2005 with a 2-1 upset of No. 8 Boston College on Oct. 29 at Ludwig Field. Jeffrey Field proved lucky for the Terps again in the 2006 season opener as they knocked off No. 10 Tennessee 1-0 at the Penn State Classic on Aug. 25.
Dreska To Miss 2007 Season
Sophomore midfielder Molly Dreska will miss the entire 2007 season after suffering a knee injury during the summer. She missed the Terps' final five games of the 2006 season due to injury as well.
