The University of Maryland men's and women's swimming teams fell to UMBC in a duel meet on Thursday, January 10. In a tight race, the men's team lost 142-92 (2-1, 1-0) while the women fell 134-99 (1-2, 0-1).
The Terps started the meet by taking the first two spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Annie Fittin finished with a time of 24.24 with Blair Cross following close behind with a time of 24.68.
Dong Kim finished first with a time of 21.33 in the same event. Kim also won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.57.
Maryland placed in the top two sports in the 200-yard backstroke. Jackie Davidson won time a time of 2:08.92. Kristen Jones took second with a final time of 2:11.74.
The Terps had an impressive showing in the 200-yard breaststroke. Captain Eric Cullen took the event with a time of 2:10.79. Haywood Miller and Roger Dent followed close behind, placing second and third, respectively.
The Terps also won the 200-yard individual medley. Nina Rossi took first with a time of 2:08.08.
Maryland's final win of the day came in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Andy Dilz, Kirk Jackson, John Closs, and Kim finished with a time of 3:08.80. Maryland also took second and third place in the event.
The relay team of Davidson, Cross, captain Emily Smoak and Fittin placed first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.55.
In the diving competition, Derek Hock placed second of six in the 1-meter event. Hock scored 220.88
Montana Puente placed second of three in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving, with scores of 186.38 and 206.33, respectively.
The women will be in action again on Saturday, January 12 when they host the Richmond Spiders at 2 pm. The men's team will compete on the road on Friday, January 18 when they travel to Pittsburg, Pa. to face Villanova, Penn State, Missouri and Pittsburg college.
Both teams will reunite on Saturday, January 26 for the 2008 ACC Season Opener, when Maryland hosts NC State for the Terps' Senior Meet.
