COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland swimming and diving program swept Saturday, defeating Towson and UMBC, in both men's and women's action at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
The women's squad, which moves to 5-2 on the year, was led by another solid day from junior Jen Vogel. Vogel was victorious in three individual events, including the 100 and 200 fly and the 200 IM. She also teamed up with Annie Fittin, Nina Rossi and Yelena Skalinskaya to win the 200 free relay for the fourth consecutive meet. Skalinskaya also picked up a pair of wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle and Jackie Davidson finished first in the 100 backstroke. The Terrapin freshmen also put together a few fine performances, as Ginny Glover (200 back), Alexa Hamilton (200 breast) and Alisa Kurbatova (1- and 3-meter diving) brought home first-place finishes.
The Maryland men's team moved over the .500 mark for the year to 4-3. The Terps started off with a win in the 200 free relay courtesy of swims from Mitch Challacombe, Eric Cullen, Roger Dent and Andy Dilz. Cullen also placed first in the 100 breaststroke. The freshman class also shined on the men's side, as Andrew Relihan won the 200 back and Sean Stewart captured the 200 fly. Senior Aleksander Damjanic won the 100 fly and Chris Sanford supplied the Terps with a first-place finish in the 100 back. Maryland's team of Challacombe, John Closs, Ryan Greene and Dilz took first in the 400 free relay.
"I thought the team did a great job today against a very competitive opponent today," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We did an immaculate job of preparing and keeping our heads in the meet and racing hard every single race."
Maryland turns its attention the highly-anticipated Terrapin Cup next weekend. The annual meet kicks off on Thursday and runs until Saturday at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
