COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Saturday belonged to the ladies, and more specifically 200 fly-specialists Patty DeScenza and Jen Vogel, as the Maryland women captured the 2008 Terrapin Cup Invitational crown while the men placed second at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

The women battled for the title amongst nine other squads, entering a final score of 787, eclipsing second-place North Carolina State by over 150 points. Vogel started the day by posting a school and pool-record best 1:59.08 in the 200 fly, only to be bested by her teammate DeScenza (1:58.42) a short time later. The finals gave Vogel a shimmer of redemption when she captured both records (1:57.72) en route to a first-place finish. DeScenza wrapped up a personal-best day for a second-place finish(1:58.17). Annie Fittin placed second in the 100 free (50.22) and the Terps swept the relays. Freshman diver Alisa Kurbatova secured a career-best 308.15 for a second-place finish in the 3-meter diving.

The men finished a solid second in team competition, thanks largely in part to a first-place finish by Mitch Challacombe in the 100 free (45.51). The Maryland men were stellar in the 200 fly as well, posting second and third place finishes by freshman Sean Stewart and senior Aleksander Damjanic, respectively. Brian Honore and Chris Rouchard took home top-three finishes in the 1650 free and freshman Andrew Relihan tallied a third-place slot in the 200 back (1:49.41). "We did a great job of coming together as a team today," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We were very pleased with the outcome of this meet."

The Maryland men's squad heads to a dual meet in Annapolis against Navy Dec. 9th in its next competition. The Terps women's squad does not return to action until Jan. 16 when it plays host to Villanova, Pittsburgh and Penn State.
