Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Kelly Kasper scored a career high six goals as the No. 6 Maryland women's lacrosse team beat Massachusetts, 18-7, in the Terrapins' season opener on February 23 at McGuirk Stadium. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden also recorded career highs in goals and points with four and five, respectively.

The Terps hounded UMass all day and forced 29 turnovers while allowing the Minutewomen to convert just 10 of 18 clear opportunities. Maryland also owned a 40-15 shot advantage as a bulk of the possession was spent on the Terps' attack.

Seniors Lauren Cohen and Dana Dobbie also recorded hat tricks on the day. Dobbie added two assists while Cohen tallied one. Senior Katie Princiotto dished out two assists and classmate Casey Magor recorded a goal and an assist.

Maryland jumped out quick with a goal in the first 1:10 of the game. Following a Massachusetts turnover, Cohen fed Dobbie from behind the net for the first goal of the game. UMass won the ensuing draw but the Terps' defense held strong, keeping the Minutewomen offense at bay for over three minutes.

McFadden earned a free position with 24:00 on the clock but hit the pipe. Maryland's pressure in the midfield forced numerous UMass turnovers as the Minutewomen failed to clear the ball four consecutive times.

When UMass finally did clear, it turned into a fast break as Haley Smith connected with Merritt Cosgrove who put the ball in the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Maryland added three-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 7:23 remaining in the half. Magor scored off a pass from McFadden at the 12:45 mark and then Kasper scored unassisted a little over a minute later, using a clever side shot to surprise the goalie. Kasper then connected again with the help of a pass from Princiotto to push the lead to 5-1.

Kathleen Typadis added the only other UMass goal in the first half with 6:48 to go when she made a nice cut across the fan from left to right.

McFadden and sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber closed out the scoring in the half to give Maryland a 7-2 lead into the break. Magor assisted on McFadden's score while Spinnenweber went unassisted, putting back a free position as she fell to the turf.

Much like in the first half, Maryland struck early as Dobbie won the opening draw and was fouled. On the restart, she made a long pass to Cohen who was wide open on the offensive end and scored the fast break goal.

It did not take long for the Minutewomen to respond though as Julie Pasquantonio scored an unassisted goal less than a minute later to make it 8-3.

The Terps scored the next two goals to give Maryland its largest lead of the game, 10-3. McFadden recorded an unassisted goal followed by a beautiful score set up by Kasper. She was roaming behind the cage and found Dobbie making a run on the left side who one-timed a shot into the back of the net at a tough angle.

The two teams traded goals all the way to 13-7 with Kasper scoring all three of Maryland's goals in that span. The Terps dominated the final 7:51 of the game, scoring each of the last five goals. Cohen scored a pair of those goals to end the game.

McCormick was the only multiple point scorer for UMass with three goals. Krissy Anderson was strong in the cage by making 12 saves.

The Terps (1-0) will now travel east on the Mass Pike to face Boston College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played on the campus of Bentley College in Waltham.
