STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Dana Dobbie scored seven goals, had one assist, and secured five draw controls to pace the No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 15-7 win at No. 10 Stanford on March 22. It is the second time in her career she has scored seven goals in a Terrapins uniform.
Dobbie matched her personal best which came at Dartmouth on March 16, 2007 in a 15-7 victory.
Seniors Lauren Cohen and Casey Magor both had hat tricks for the Terps while classmate Kelly Kasper dished out two assists while recording five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Kasper now has 75 career assists which is one away from entering the top 10 all-time.
Maryland's defense allowed less than 10 goals for the fourth-straight game and forced 18 Cardinal turnovers. Senior Katie Pumphrey caused six turnovers while sophomore Karissa Taylor forced four. Senior Allie Buote made 10 saves in goal.
The win ended Stanford's three-game win streak which included a pair of wins over top-10 teams in Penn and Notre Dame.
For the third-straight game, the Terps jumped out to a quick lead as they scored the first four goals of the contest. Cohen scored two goals in the run while Dobbie had one goal and assisted on the game's first score. Maryland's first four goals came in less than five minutes.
Stanford cut the lead in half with back-to-back goals as Dana Lindsay used a pass from Claire Hubbard for the first Cardinal goal of the game with 20:16 left in the half. Two minutes later, Laura Shane made a save for Stanford and the Cardinal took it the other way as Charity Fluharty scored in transition to make it 4-2.
Maryland's defense would clamp down for the rest of the 18:17 off the half by not allowing a goal and the offense produced three more to give the Terps a 7-2 halftime lead. Dobbie, Magor, and sophomore Caitlyn McFadden scored the goals to close the first half.
Stanford responded in the second half by scoring the first three goals to cut the deficit to two, 7-5. Daphne Peterson earned a free position 1:15 in and her first attempt was saved by Buote, but she recovered and picked up the loose ball and put it away for the Cardinal's first goal.
Bess Siegfried scored a little over a minute later with an assist from Sarah Flynn and then Peterson scored her second goal of the run to cut the lead to 7-5.
Cohen was fouled on the offensive end at the 19:39 mark and converted on a free position to end the Cardinal run and then Dobbie scored the next two, with Kasper assisting on the latter, to push the lead to 10-5.
Peterson connected on a free position opportunity for Stanford to make it 10-6 with 9:04 left, but the Terps scored five unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Dobbie recorded a hat trick during that span while fellow seniors Magor and Katie Princiotto also scored for Maryland.
Stanford (6-3) was led by Peterson who scored three times while Siegfried recorded two goals. Shane was credited with 17 saves in goal with 12 of them coming in the second half.
Maryland (8-1) returns home when it hosts Towson on Wednesday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
