BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Dana Dobbie broke the NCAA single-season draw control record on May 3 in a 20-4 win at Loyola at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. Dobbie collected three in the game and now has 114 this year which tops Georgetown's Coco Stanwick who had 113 in 2006. Four Maryland players picked up hat tricks in the win.
Dobbie, who is already the NCAA career draw control leader, now has 322 in her four seasons. The previous record holder was Gloria Lozano of Georgetown who had 223 from 2001-04. Lozano set her record in 74 games while Dobbie eclipsed her mark in just 48 games.
Dobbie added four goals in the win as did junior Kate Faas off the bench. Senior Kelly Kasper recorded three goals and two assists which all came in the first half. Freshman Laura Merrifield also picked up a hat trick and senior Katie Princiotto contributed with a goal and a pair of assists. Senior Allie Buote was strong in goal with eight saves.
The Terps opened the game with 10 unanswered goals and the Maryland defense pitched a shutout until the 3:01 mark of the first half. Kasper opened the scoring with 26:26 on the clock when she scored unassisted on the right side. Dobbie then scored consecutive goals in 43 seconds to make it 3-0.
The Terps rattled off seven more goals en route to the 10-0 opening run. Kasper recorded a hat trick in the opening half and also added a pair of assists. Dobbie picked up a pair of goals as did Faas off the bench. Maryland had nine different point scorers in the first half and 12 in the game.
Loyola was unable to muster up any offense until it found the back of the net with 3:01 to go. Grace Gavin dished off to Abby Rehfuss for the Greyhounds' first goal, but Faas scored the last goal of the half with 39 seconds left to put the Terps up 11-1 after 30 minutes.
Maryland continued its offensive productivity in the second half after Filippelli scored the opening goal 23 seconds in. Senior Lauren Cohen and Princiotto scored consecutive goals to make it 13-2 before Gavin scored again to pull Loyola to within 10.
The Greyhounds never got any closer and the Terps pulled away for the 20-4 victory.
Loyola (6-10) was led by Filippelli who had two goals and an assist while Grace had a goal and a helper.
Maryland (17-2) will learn its NCAA fate on Monday night when the bracket is announced between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. on CBS College Sports Network.
