COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second-straight season, the Maryland women's basketball team was ranked in the top 10 in the nation in average attendance. The Terps ranked eighth in the country among all NCAA Division I schools in 2007-08, averaging 7,946 fans at 21 home contests. Maryland's home, road and neutral site games were also the third-most attended in the nation.
The Terrapins have ranked in the top 25 in average attendance over the last four years. The nearly 8,000 average attendance is the second-best in the history of the program. After winning the 2006 national championship, the team ranked a school-record sixth in the nation in average attendance, with over 9,500 attending home games. It was also the nation's best single-season improvement in average attendance from the previous season.
The Terps broke the program's record for actual attendance, as 166,883 spectators made their way into Comcast Center for 21 games, breaking last year's mark of 152,523, the first time ever the team drew over 150,000 fans in a single season.
Only 11 teams in the nation had over 100,000 fans attend home games in 2007-08. Maryland was one of just six to have total attendance of over 150,000 and is the third-highest total mark behind Tennessee and Connecticut.
More than 250,000 people also attended Maryland's 37 games on the season. The figure includes games at Comcast Center, on the road and at neutral site games. The Terps played in front of 10,000+ fans six times in 2007-08, with five of those games coming at Comcast Center. The Terrapins played in front of a near-capacity crowd when they hosted Florida State on Feb. 24, 2008, as 16,135 spectators turned out for the team's final regular-season home game. Maryland's game vs. Duke on Jan. 14, 2008 was the second-highest attended home game at 15,531.
Season tickets for the 2008-09 Maryland women's basketball season are now on sale at www.umterps.com, by visiting the Comcast Center Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
