COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland women's basketball team begins the 39th season in program history at 7 p.m. Saturday against North Carolina Central at Comcast Center.
Maryland, which is ranked 21st in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, is 31-7 all-time in season openers. The Terrapins will be facing a new opponent Saturday, as they have never played the Eagles of North Carolina Central. The Eagles are in only their third season as a Division I women's basketball program.
The Terps have one of the youngest rosters in the nation this year, as only four sophomores return from last season's team and six newcomers are in the mix. The youthful Terps had a productive preseason, though, dominating a pair of exhibitions against Bowie State and Catholic, respectively.
Sophomore center Lynetta Kizer is Maryland's top returner this season, coming off an impressive freshman season in which she earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors. Fellow sophomores Anjalé Barrett, Kim Rodgers and Yemi Oyefuwa are the other returners from last year's ACC Championship squad.
Despite having six newcomers, the Terps will add some veteran help in senior guard Lori Bjork, a transfer from Illinois who was named third-team all-Big Ten two years ago and own the program's all-time records in made 3-pointers and 3-point percentage.
Head coach Brenda Frese is entering her eighth season with Maryland. Frese is 176-60 in College Park, quickly rebuilding the program en route to winning the 2006 national championship and 2009 ACC Championship.
The Eagles return four starters from last season's 10-17 team. Like the Terps, however, the Eagles boast a young roster with nine underclassmen.
