COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Greivis Vasquez got 13 assists on opening night, then passed around the credit for Maryland's season-opening victory.

Landon Milbourne scored 16, and the Terrapins placed four other players in double figures Friday night in an 89-51 rout of Charleston Southern.

"I thought everybody played well. It was a team win," said Vasquez, who scored nine points on 3-for-14 shooting. "I have to have a better shot selection, but it's about my teammates. It's not about me."

Last season it was all about Vasquez, who led the Terrapins in scoring, rebounds and assists. Maryland lost only one senior from that team and added two solid freshmen, Jordan Williams (who had 12 points and nine rebounds) and James Padgett (10 points, eight rebounds).

Sean Mosley scored 15 and Eric Hayes added 10 for the Terrapins, who never trailed.

"We can't count on Greivis every night getting 25 points a game," Hayes said. "We have a lot of guys on the team who are capable of getting double figures. I think a balanced offense is a good thing for us."

The victory improved Maryland's record at the Comcast Center to 100-20 since the building opened in 2002.

Jamarco Warren led Charleston Southern (0-1) with 14 points. The Buccaneers are 1-41 against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference; the lone win came against Georgia Tech in the 1980-81 season.

"I thought we competed well in the first half. In the second half, they wore us down a little bit with their size," coach Barclay Radebaugh said. "We'll find some good out of this."

Maryland used a 14-5 run at the outset of the second half to take a 51-30 lead. After Milbourne hit a jumper, Hayes made the Terrapins' first 3-pointer of the game and Vasquez threw a behind-the-back pass to Mosley for an easy layup. Milbourne wrapped up the spree by sandwiching two layups around another 3-pointer by Hayes.

"We came out, pressed and put the game away pretty quickly," Maryland coach Gary Williams said.

Minutes later, Vasquez and Hayes connected from beyond the arc and Milbourne added a layup to make it 59-32.

"Defensively, I thought they did a great job with their press," Radebaugh said. "I thought we were prepared for it, but their size and speed was a little different than what we're used to."

Despite going 0 for 7 from 3-point range, the Terrapins got 10 points from Williams and had six steals in going up 37-25 at halftime.

Williams got Maryland started by hitting a jumper in the lane off the opening tip. The Buccaneers missed five of their first six shots and had three turnovers before Warren sank a 3-pointer to make it 8-5.

Williams answered with a follow-shot that sparked a 10-5 spurt, and minutes later the Terrapins peeled off nine straight points for a 27-13 lead.
