COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team has a strong lead after day one of the 2009 Terrapin Cup at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

The Terrapin women are 85 points ahead of second place Connecticut a third of the way through the three-day event in College Park.

The Terps kicked off Thursday night's finals with a win in the 200 free relay (1:32.87) courtesy of Annie Fittin, Laura Wright, Megan Lafferty and Ginny Glover.

Maryland followed that with a dominant showing in the 200 IM with five Terrapins making the finals. Jen Vogel (2:03.38) won the event while Martha VanLieshout (2:05.08) took third and Nina Rossi (2:05.69) touched the wall fourth.

The streak of top finishes continued as Fittin finished third in the 50 free (23.04) and Lafferty (23.72) and Wright (23.76) took sixth and eighth, respectively.

Alisa Kurbatova captured the 1-meter diving (248.55) while the Terps ended on a strong note, as the 400 medley relay team of Fittin, Alexa Hamilton, Vogel and Wright finished first (3:45.70).

Maryland returns for day two of the 2009 Terrapin Cup at 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Parking advisory: Fans are asked to prepare for heavy traffic due to the Maryland men's basketball game Friday night. Parking is available in the Stadium Drive Parking Garage or at metered spots in front of Eppley Recreation Center.
