COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Greivis Vasquez lamented finishing two rebounds short of a triple-double, for reasons that had nothing to do with personal glory.

Vasquez merely wanted to do more for Maryland on the defensive end of the court.

The senior guard had a season-high 27 points and 11 assists Tuesday night, and the Terrapins never trailed in a 98-55 rout of Winston-Salem State on Tuesday night.

It was the first double-double of the season for Vasquez and the 11th of his career. He had eight rebounds when pulled from the game with exactly 5 minutes left.

Asked if he was disappointed about barely missing his second career triple-double, Vasquez replied, "Yes. I need to set the tone defensively. I really take that upon myself. I can get 10 rebounds. I'm capable of helping the big guys get rebounds and being aggressive defensively."

After getting off to a slow start offensively this season, Vasquez has reached the 20-point mark in three of his last four games.

"You see tonight what he's capable of. It's there and it will happen," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "Hopefully that will be there the next game. That's very important because he's a leader and it kind of helps everyone else."

Coming off a nine-day layoff for exams, the Terrapins (7-3) led by only four points late in the first half and by 12 at halftime. Maryland then scored 23 of the first 28 points after the break to go up by 30.

Paul Davis scored 15 for Winston-Salem State (2-7). It was the Rams' third loss this season by at least 40 points.

The Terrapins shot 57 percent from the floor and had five players score in double figures. Vasquez made all four of his 3-point tries, and Maryland went 12 for 18 from beyond the arc.

"They shot the ball unbelievably," Rams coach Bobby Collins said. "You're not going to win a lot of games when a team shoots as well as they did."

Especially Vasquez.

"He never got shaken, and he never took a shot out of character," Collins said. "He's a good player, and we're going to see him on the next level one day."

It was 53-32 early in the second half before Vasquez tallied 10 points in a 16-5 spree. Vasquez also received an assist on a 3-pointer by Adrian Bowie.

The Terrapins shot 48 percent and went 9-for-14 from beyond the arc in taking a 41-29 halftime lead.

Maryland expanded a one-point advantage to 29-18 with a 14-4 run that included four 3-pointers, including two from Bowie.

Brian Fisher then contributed a 3-pointer and a driving layup to an 11-4 surge that cut the gap to 33-29. But Maryland closed the half with an 8-0 run in which Vasquez made a fastbreak layup and a long-range jumper before setting up Cliff Tucker for a 3-pointer.
