COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Eleanor Peters won her clinching match at No. 1 singles and the Maryland women's tennis team cruised to a win over West Virginia. The Terps dominated the Mountaineers throughout competition, winning all nine individual matches en route to the team's third victory on the season.
The Terrapins (3-8, 0-2) started the afternoon hot, grabbing the doubles point by winning all three contests. Michal Amir and Julia Huschke captured the first doubles victory as they crushed West Virginia (5-8, 0-2) duo Stephanie LaFortune and Monique Burton, 8-2. The win at the No. 3 slot by Peters and Jordan Hansbrough over Olga Elkin and Veronica Cardenas, 8-5, clinched the point for the Terps.
With the doubles point already sealed, Lisa Miller and Maggie MacKeever edged out Gabriela Blaskovicova and Ashley Pilsbury, 8-5.
After sweeping the doubles matches, Maryland continued to control the Mountaineers, winning all six singles matches.
At No. 3 singles, Amir did not allow Burton to take a single game, winning 6-0, 6-0. Lundmark exercised similar dominance as she defeated LaFortune, 6-1, 6-0. The win was Lundmark's fifth dual match victory and gave the Terps a 3-0 match lead.
Needing just one win in the final four pairings to clinch the match win, the Terrapins wasted no time putting the cap on a stellar afternoon. Peters defeated Elkin at the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 6-3, sealing Maryland's third victory this season.
With the win already in hand, the Terps tacked on three additional singles victories. Oksana Krutiyenko knocked off Pilsbury, 6-3, 6-3, while MacKeever bested Kathryn Haught in a close contest, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
The final match to end Friday evening was the team captain Miller's battle with Veronica Cardenas. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Miller went on to win the second set 6-2, and edge Cardenas in the third set tiebreaker 11-9.
The 7-0 win over West Virginia is the second clean sweep for the Terps this season, after downing Columbia 7-0, on February 7.
Playing on the outdoor courts for the first time this season, Head Coach Martin Novak was happy with the way his team adjusted.
"It was a great adjustment by the team", said Novak. "The girls maintained composure and played well."
The Terps return to the courts Sunday, March 8, for another match at the Tennis Center at College Park against ACC foe Boston College.
