COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
After topping conference-foe Miami in the Sunshine State last weekend, the Maryland women's swimming and diving team takes on Rutgers at home Saturday. The dual meet begins at 1 p.m. at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
Maryland (6-1, 3-1 ACC) recently ranked among those `receiving votes' in the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Top 25 Poll. The Terps boast 16 individual top-ten times in the ACC this season, led by Annie Fittin, Jen Vogel and reigning ACC Swimming Performer of the Week Ginny Glover.
Fittin ranks among the ACC's finest in the four events, highlighted by a B-cut performance in the 100 back which sits second in the conference in 2009-10. The sophomore also has the fourth-fastest time in the 50 free (23.04), 10th in the 100 free (50.75) and eighth in the 100 fly (55.03).
Vogel, Maryland's lone returning All-American this season, ranks second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 fly with B-cut times of 54.19 and 1:59.56, respectively. The senior is also ninth in the 200 IM (2:03.38).
Glover, who tallied her second ACC weekly honor earlier this week, boasts three top-ten performances, including the ninth-best finish in the 200 free (1:49.96), seventh in the 100 back (55.67) and third in the 200 back (1:58.91), which earned the sophomore a B-cut tally.
On the boards, Alisa Kurbatova continues to shine and currently ranks 10th in the ACC in the 3-meter (308.33).
Rutgers enters Saturday's dual meet with a 4-0 record, having disposed of BIG EAST opponents Connecticut, Villanova and West Virginia along with Wagner in its last outing. Catherine Whetstone, who was named BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week earlier this season, leads the Scarlet Knights in the 100 back with an NCAA `B' cut time of 56.49. Erin Saunders is a major threat in the 1- and 3-meter dive.
Maryland has three more competitions on its slate before heading to Chapel Hill for the 2010 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. Following a trip to Pittsburgh for a quad against Pitt, Villanova and Penn State, Maryland closes out the regular season by hosting West Virginia Jan. 23 and Georgetown Feb. 6.
