TROY, N.Y. - The University of Maryland wrestling team won two out of three dual meets Saturday at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y., defeating Penn and Northern Iowa while losing to No. 13 Missouri.

"We did a good job today," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We had some hard fought wins and a couple of tough losses, but all in all I'm happy with where we are right now."

McCoy and the Terrapins started the meet early on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. against Penn. Down by six after two matches, Jon Kohler got the ball rolling with a 4-0 decision over No. 16 Zack Kemerer. Maryland went on to win the next six bouts, including No. 12 Mike Letts' 6-2 decision over No. 7 Scott Giffin, to take the meet, 25-10.

Against Northern Iowa in the second round, Pat Strizki started strong for the Terps with an 11-5 decision over Caleb Flores. Yet, the Panthers took the next two matches to create a quick 6-3 lead over Maryland. Ben Dorsay countered with a fall over Jamal Lawrence to help the Terps retake the lead, 9-6, which followed by three consecutive victories for No. 18 Kyle John, Asper and Letts. Northern Iowa, however, racked up bonus points at 184 and then a 2-1 decision at 197 to keep things tight heading into the heavyweight match, featuring No. 15 Christian Brantley and freshman Spencer Myers. In order to retain the team victory, Myers needed to prevent a pin fall, which he did successfully, as he fought off Brantley to a respectable, 2-1 defeat, ensuring the Maryland win.

In the finale, No 13 Missouri presented a tougher challenge for the Terps with four top-20 ranked wrestlers. Missouri started things off strong, claiming the first four matches. However, Maryland's trio of ranked wrestelrs, John, Asper and Letts, along with Corey Peltier at 184, fought back with four straight decisions of their own to tie things up at 12 points apiece. Unfortunately, the Terps couldn't keep the momentum going as they lost the final two matches, including Myers' 2-1 defeat to No. 2 Dom Bradley.

Maryland finished 2-1 at the Northeast Duals for the second year in a row, with the Terps topping Northern Colorado and No. 12 Lehigh before falling to No. 10 Central Michigan in 2009.

On the year, the Terps improved to 5-2 in dual meets, including 3-2 against top-50 squads.

The Terps will compete at the Penn State Open on Dec. 5 before heading out to No. 27 Hofstra on Dec. 11. Maryland's next home meet will be on Jan. 22 against Navy followed by its Atlantic Coast Conference opener at home against Virginia Tech on Jan. 23.
