Wilkes Open Results

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Ty Snook won the individual title at 184 pounds and Mark Hartenstine placed third at 141 pounds as a number of University of Maryland wrestlers competed at the Wilkes Open, hosted by Wilkes University on Tuesday.
In all, nine Terrapin wrestlers combined for 19 victories in the tournament, nicknamed the Rose Bowl of Wrestling.
"It's great for our program. This is the first time in a long time that we've had a champ at this event," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I am very happy for those guys."
A redshirt freshman, Snook claimed his first tournament title by rattling off four consecutive victories, capped by a 12-4 win over Steven Cressley of Clarion. The Bear, Del. native, opened with a 3-2 decision over top-seeded Shawn Fausey of Drexel before handling Wilkes' Matthew Transue, 7-5. In the 184-pound semifinal match, Snook topped Pitt-Johnstown's Andrew Brentzel, 3-1 in sudden victory.
Hartenstine, a true freshman, took home third place at the 141-pound weight class thanks to five dominating victories. Hartenstine made his presence known in the opening match, topping Franklin & Marshall's Aaron Velasquez 16-0. After shutting out Garet Pisani of Clarion and Ryan Wilson of Wilkes, 5-0 and 7-0, respectively, Hartenstine lost his only match to Dave Cawley of Pitt-Johnstown in the quarterfinal round. Yet, the Easton, Pa. native rebounded with back-to-back victories of Justin Belanger of Sacred Heart and Kodie Silvesti of Nassau to take home third place.
With many of Maryland's starters currently participating in the 48th annual Midlands Championship in Evanston, Ill., the Terrapins will return to action on Jan. 7, when they travel to Boston University and Harvard for duals meets at 3 and 7 p.m., respectively.
