EVANSTON, Ill. - Kyle John finished in second place at 157 pounds and the University of Maryland wrestling team finished 13th out of 44 teams at the Midlands Championship on Thursday.

John, a seven-seed, rattled off six straight victories, capped off with a 10-3 decision over No. 20 Daryl Cocozzo, whom John lost to earlier in the season. In the championship match, John ultimately fell short, losing by just four points to No. 19 Chase Nelson of Oklahoma.

The Terps also saw a solid performance from No. 16 Mike Letts, who finished sixth at 174 pounds. A four-seed, Letts advanced to the semifinals after victories over Illinois' Dan Stelter, Bucknell's David Thompson and Pittsburgh's Adam Counterman.

"Our guys are much better than they showed," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "With that being said, there are a lot of positives we can build on from this experience. Kyle John making the finals is huge, especially since he avenged a loss from earlier in the season to get there. We scored a lot of bonus points and every one won a least one match. We will be better the next time we compete."

With 48.50 points, Maryland finished in 13th, tied with No. 9 Northwestern. Last year, the Terps finished in sixth, the team's best performance ever at the Midlands Championship.

McCoy and the Terps are next in action on Jan. 7 when they travel to Massachusetts to take on Boston University and Harvard at noon and 7 p.m., respectively.
