Nittany Lion Open Results

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -
No. 3 Josh Asper and No. 8 Mike Letts each won five matches to take individual titles at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, Sunday at the Nittany Lion Open, hosted by Penn State University.
"It was a good day," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Having 10 guys place in an event with this level of competition is great. Mike and Josh did great jobs winning their weight classes. It was also nice to see our young guys and non-starters in action. We still have areas we need to improve, but I am happy with where we are right now."
A redshirt sophomore, Asper won his second open of the season by dominating the competition at the 165 pound division. After opening with a 22-6 decision over Penn State's Justin Haug, Asper recorded a first-period pin over Nicholas Czapla of Bucknell and then a 6-0 major decision over Navy's Mason Bailey. In the semi-finals, the Hereford, Md., native took a 6-0 decision over John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo before pinning Dick Cowburn of Penn State in just 2:24 for the title.
Following Asper's lead, senior Mike Letts finished 5-0 and won the individual title at 174 pounds. Letts pinned Angelo Malvestuto of Virginia Tech and then won four straight decisions leading up to a 9-4 decision over No. 14 Ed Ruth of Penn State in the finals. Letts is now 4-1 over top-20 opponents.
No. 18 Kyle John and Shane Gentry claimed third place at 157 and 133 pounds, respectively after each finished with only one loss on the day. Christian Boley (197) took fourth and Corey Peltier (184) claimed fifth while Jenkins Monzey and Lou Ruland captured sixth at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Mark Hartenstine (141) and Spencer Myers (285) each placed seventh.
Maryland's grapplers combined for a 61-35 record Sunday, with 12 Terps recording at least three victories.
The Terps return to action Saturday, when they travel to No. 23 Hofstra for a duals meet at 2 p.m. Maryland is 5-2 in dual competition this season.
