COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Adam Kolarek and Matt Marquis hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning as Maryland rallied from an early deficit to defeat Delaware 10-6 Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader at Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Kolarek went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs and Marquis went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI as Maryland (1-4) scored four runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to get its first win of the season.
Ian Schwalenberg (1-0) earned the win, pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Eric Potter. After giving up three runs in the first, Potter settled down and pitched effectively for the next 3 2/3. The junior struck out six on the day while walking one.
Schwalenberg came on with two outs in the fifth and runners on first and second and induced Josh Dean into an inning-ending groundout.
Nick Young (0-2) went five innings for Delaware (1-4), giving up six runs on 10 hits in the loss.
The game opened with home runs for each team. Carlos Alonso led off the top of the first with a home run down the left field line and David Poutier hit Maryland's first home run of the season in the bottom half of the first.
Maryland tacked on a run in the third when Mike Rozak doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, bringing the Terps within one. That set the stage for the four-run fifth, where Maryland took a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Kolarek hit a two-run double in the seventh to expand Maryland's lead to 8-3. After an infield single by Marquis gave the Terps runners on first and second, the Terps executed a double steal and loaded the bases when Matthew Murakami drew a walk. Kolarek scored when Jack Cleary was hit by a pitch, and Marquis tacked on Maryland's final run when Rozak walked.
The Blue Hens' Steve Ulaky hit a two-run home run in the eighth and Delaware tacked on an unearned run in the ninth, but Dan Gentzler recorded the final three outs to secure the win for Maryland.
The Terps and Blue Hens will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. RHP Sander Beck or LHP Adam Kolarek will take to the mound for Maryland, while RHP Rich O'Donald is expected to start for Delaware.
