Final NCAA West Regional Results

STANFORD, Calif. - After three days of competition on the west coast, the Maryland women's golf team concluded play in the NCAA West Regional tournament with an 18th place finish. Senior Carly Hunt led the team with a 16-over-par 229.

Arizona won the tournament with a score of 876 (291-294-291). Callie Nielson of Virginia and Madeliene Ziegert of San Jose State won co-medalist honors with a one-over-par 214. The top eight schools advance to the NCAA Championship tournament to be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall and will be hosted by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. UCLA, Texas, Alabama, Virginia, Stanford, San Jose State and Texas A&M will all advance.

Maryland carded a 316 on the first day of play and finished in 21st. Freshman Hayley Brown carded a team low round of 78 Thursday.

On the second day several of the Terrapins improved their scores resulting in a 10 stroke jump to a 306. Hunt led the way with a three-over-par 74. Freshman Christine Shimel recorded a 77, two strokes better than her first round, while sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth improved by five strokes for a 76. Hollandsworth started the day on the back nine getting an early lead with a birdie on the second hole. She finished even on the final nine.

The Terps matched their second day's score of 306 in the final round of competition. Hunt again led her team, recording a 75. Shimel also earned a 75, her low round for the tournament. Brown carded a 77, two strokes better than yesterday while junior Kerri Connolly took six strokes off her game with a 79 on day three.

Of 122 competitors, Hunt finished in a tie for 49th, Shimel tied for 60th, Brown in 76th, Hollandsworth in a tie for 91st and Connolly came in a tie for 108th.
