Scouting The Terps
Maryland opens its 2010 season ranked No. 16 in the preseason NSCAA poll and #12 in the preseason poll by Soccer America. The Terrapins are coming off one of the best seasons in their history with a 12-4-2 record, a No. 11 ranking in the final NSCAA poll and making it to the Sweet 16 of the 2009 NCAA College Cup.
The Terps will be led on offense by 2010 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list selection Jasmyne Spencer. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native led Maryland with 10 goals and 25 points last season en route to being named to the All-ACC first team and the NSCAA All-Southeast Region first team. Joining Spencer up top for the Terps will be sophomore Ashley Grove could get the starting nod. Juniors Sade Ayinde and Cristina Sanchez-Quintinar will come off the bench for the Terps at foward.
The midfield will be anchored by senior co-captain Lydia Hastings will also be out wide and will be looking to return to her 2008 form that saw her total a team-best 14 points. Sophomore Domenica Hodak will control the center defensive midfield, while junior Amy O'Sullivan could get the starting spot at offensive center midfield. Sophomores Rachel Lamarre, who transferred from Penn State in the spring, and Olivia Wagner and freshman Kayla Clarke will provide midfield depth.
The Terps lost both wide backs to graduation, but head coach Caitlin McDowell and sophomore Mallory Baker and Colleen Deegan. Other defenders that will provide depth for the Terps will be senior Erika Theisen, junior Kristen McAfee and sophomore Bailey Bodell.
The biggest question mark for the Terps in 2010 is in goal with junior Yewande Balogun battling it out with redshirt sophomores Lianne Maldonado and Shannon Zickler for the starting spot. All three are solid shot-stoppers that can do the job for the Terps.
Scouting The Gaels
Iona is opening its 2010 season with its first-ever meeting with the Terrapins.
The Gaels were 8-12-1 overall last season and finished with a 5-4-0 record in the Mid-American Athletic Conference. Gabrielle D'Aprile led the team with 11 points on four goals and three assists and is a preseason All-MAAC selection. Joining her on the preseason All-MAAC team is defender Diane Hare. Junior goalkeeper Kelly Mahone started eight games in 2009 and finished the season with a 5-5-0 record, a 1.62 goals-against average and 55 saves.
What is a Gael?
The symbol of Iona College's athletic teams is the popular Gael. A Gael is anyone of Irish-Gaelic ancestry, consistent with the Irish tradition of Iona. The College was founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, commonly known as the Irish Christian Brothers. (credit: icgaels.com).
Scouting The Tigers
Missouri will be making its first-ever trip to College Park to face the Terps after opening its season at home vs. Belmont on Friday.
The Tigers, who have won back-to-back Big 12 championships, finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 13-6-3, and the regular season Big 12 title. The team has seven newcomers including senior goalkeeper, Paula Pritzen, who comes to Missouri from Clemson. The team lost four starters from last season, including Kristin Andrighetto, Michelle Collins and goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore.
Looking Ahead
After this weekend's season-opening homestand the Terps will hit the road for two games in Knoxville, Tenn., next weekend. The Terps will play host Tennessee on Friday, Aug. 27 at 8 p.m. before wrapping up the road trip with Kennesaw State on Sunday, Aug 24 at 12:30 p.m.
Spencer Receives Preseason Recognition
Junior Jasmyne Spencer has earned two major preseason honors heading into the 2010 season. Spencer became the first Terp in the program's history to be named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List and then was named to Soccer America's Preseason All-America team.
Spencer enjoyed a breakthough season in her second year in the Terrapin program. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native started the year with the game-winning goal in the 3-0 win over Army and didn't slowed up from there. Spencer led the team with 25 points on 10 goals, including four game-winners, and was tied for second on the squad with five assists. Her 25 points were the most fo Terrapin in a season since 1998 when Keri Sarver set the school record with 49 points. Her 10 goals are also the most since 1999 when Jackie Mynarski had 11.
Ranked Terps
The Terps are ranked in the preseason for the first time since 2003 when Maryland was No. 23. This season the Terps are No. 16 in the preseason NSCAA poll, which is the highest ranking for the Terps since 1997 when they entered the year No. 7 in the country.
At Ludwig Field
Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women's soccer team. All-time Maryland is 99-46-16 (.665) at Ludwig Field.
Through the seasons, the Terps have had a knack for shutting teams out at Ludwig Field. Maryland has won 68 of its 99 victories (68.7%) at Ludwig Field via shutout. Add in the nine 0-0 ties the Terps have had at Ludwig Field and it totals 77 times that Maryland has shutout its opponent in 161 games (47.8%).
Head Coach Brian Pensky
Brian Pensky begins his sixth season as the head coach of the Maryland women's soccer program. After helping lead the Terrapin men's program to three-straight appearances in the College Cup, Pensky took over the women's soccer program prior to the 2005 season. He has steadily built the program back to prominence and took it to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2004 last season. Pensky owns an overall head coaching record of 37-45-13 (.458).
