MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -
Less than 24 hours after their dual win against Bucknell, members of the University of Maryland wrestling team competed at the Shorty Hitchcock Open, hosted by Millersville University.
Christian Boley and Spencer Myers claimed individual titles at the 197-pound and heavyweight classes, respectively, while Mark Hartenstine earned runner-up at 141 pounds.
"It was a good showing for our guys," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Spencer and Christian did great jobs, especially with the quick turnaround from the dual."
Both Boley and Myers competed in the Terrapins' dual against Bucknell just one night prior with Boley losing a close decision to Jay Hahn and Myers earning a 19-4 technical fall over Austin Fallon.
At 197 pounds, Boley opened and closed the Shorty Hitchcock Open with major decisions, topping Millersville's Daniel Cox 16-6 in the first round and shutting out Franklin & Marshall's Colin Ely 8-0 in the championship.
At heavyweight, Myers pinned Army Prep's Rodney Sharp in the second period and after stringing together three more victories, the true freshman handled Derek Papagianopoulos of Virginia 6-1 in the title bout.
Hartenstine finished in second at 141 pounds after losing in sudden victory to Virginia Tech's Zach Niebert in the championship match. Hartenstine, however, opened the day with back-to-back technical falls followed by a pin over Bloomsburg's Matt Hicks.
