BOSTON -
After entering the ITA Rankings this week for the first time this season, the No. 71 Terps knocked off their second ranked opponent in as many tries, beating the No. 46 Crimson 6-1 at the Gordon Indoor Track and Tennis Facility in Boston Sunday afternoon.
Junior Ana Belzunce, unbeaten on the season, gave Maryland (5-1, 0-1 ACC) clutch performances in both singles and doubles. Belzunce sealed the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Harvard's Kristin Norton at No. 3 singles. In doubles, Belzunce, along with partner Welma Luus, gave the Terps an early 1-0 lead over Harvard (2-3, 0-0 Ivy League) with a 9-7 victory over Hannah Morrill and Samantha Rosekrans at No. 3 doubles. Belzunce improved to 6-0 in both singles and doubles this season.
"It was a great victory for the team," said Belzunce. "We have been working really hard and the last victories we had motivated us to keep going. We are improving each day to perform better in the next
matches."
Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar also remained perfect on the season. She picked up the first win of the match with Jordaan Sanford at No. 1 doubles over Norton and Hideko Tachibana, 8-3. Playing at No. 2 singles for the first time this season proved no problem as Sanchez-Quintanar grabbed her sixth singles win of the year 6-4, 6-4 over Tachibana.
Julia Huschke, Jordan Hansbrough, and Luus also picked up singles victories in the Terps' win over Harvard.
"I'm really proud of how the girls competed," said assistant coach Dianne Matias. "Today's match could have gone either way, but everyone stayed tough and kept fighting."
Maryland is off to its best start since the 2006-2007 season, when they started off 6-0.
Next Saturday Maryland travels to Blacksburg, Va. for a matchup with ACC rival Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. before heading home for a two week stretch.
