PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
After suffering their first defeat of the season at Boston College Friday afternoon, the Terps responded in a big way Sunday, knocking off their first ranked opponent since 2007 with a 6-1 win at No. 64 Brown.
Maryland (4-1, 0-1 ACC) once again got strong performances across the board. Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar continued to stay unbeaten through five matches this season. She and Jordaan Sanford made quick work of the Bears' Bianca Aboukabare and Jessica Harrow with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. That gave the Terps the first points of the match after Julia Huschke and Jordan Hansbrough had already finished off Cassandra Herzberg and Ariel Caldwell 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Sanchez Quintanar continued to make quick work of the Bears beating Herzberg 6-2, 6-2 to give the Terps a decisive 3-0 lead.
"Friday night's loss was disappointing for us," said Sanchez-Quintanar. "But our efforts and hard work were rewarded today against a tough ranked team in Brown. I'm so pleased we are getting some results and putting the Terps back on the tennis map... it's fun."
Sanford finished off Brown (0-4, 0-0 Ivy League), securing the Terps victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Aboukabare at No. 1 singles for the fourth and deciding point of the match.
Maryland also got strong performances from senior Huschke who defeated Brown's Julie Flanzer 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus also scored singles wins for the Terps.
"While the season is just getting started, it would be silly for us not to recognize and celebrate our first win over a nationally ranked opponent" said head coach Howard Joffe. "I'm very proud of how quickly our girls have been able to turn around the Terp women's tennis program in triple quick time! They are a group of great character, and distinguish themselves in the classy way they go about their business"
Maryland, which last defeated a ranked team on Feb. 3, 2007 (No. 48 Mississippi), gets a week off before visiting another Ivy League opponent when it faces No. 45 Harvard next Sunday at noon in Cambridge, Mass.
