COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Following a short rest after Friday's battle with No. 31 Florida State, the University of Maryland women's tennis team lost to the fifth-ranked Miami Hurricanes 7-0 Saturday afternoon.
Maryland (12-7, 2-7 ACC) got a strong performance from Welma Luus and Ana Belzunce at No. 2 doubles, grabbing an 8-4 win over Miami's Gabriela Mejia and Melissa Bolivar. But the `Canes' Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein, ranked 11th in the country in doubles, broke back from a 6-6 tie to edge out the Terps top duo of Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford, 8-6 giving Miami (17-4, 9-1 ACC) the early 1-0 lead.
Doubles has been a good indicator of the Terps success this season; they have dropped just one match in which they have won the doubles point. Cristina Stancu got her first start at doubles, partnering with Julia Huschke at the No. 3 position. The pair was defeated by the Hurricanes Brittany Dubins and Danielle Mills 8-1.
Sanchez-Quintanar gave the No. 8 player in the country, and reigning ACC Player of the Week, a battle at No. 1 singles. In the second set she fought back to a 4-4 tie before ultimately falling 6-4, 6-4 to Eichkorn.
"Our girls fought pretty hard," said Maryland head coach Howard Joffe. "Miami is a very good team, a very well-coached team. They were just too good for us outdoors." Maryland wrapped up its home season against the `Canes but will travel to North Carolina for two more matches next weekend.
The Terps will visit Wake Forest Friday for a 3 p.m. showdown before heading to Raleigh Saturday to take on NC State at noon in the regular season finale for the Terps.
Match Notes: Maryland honored senior Julia Huschke before the match. The senior has started all 19 matches for the Terps this season at both singles and double and is a two-year starter.
