The Maryland softball team finished off a three-game sweep at Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win at the Tech Softball Park. It's the Terps' third ACC series sweep this season.
With Saturday's wins, the Terrapins (37-14, 11-5 ACC) notched the most ACC wins in school history with 10. They currently sit in second in the ACC standings. With today's win, Maryland has earned its highest season win total since 2001.
Senior Kerry Hickey started in the circle for Maryland. She pitched 7.0 shutout innings and allowed the Hokies (35-19, 9-12 ACC) just two hits and two walks. She notched five strikeouts.
Maryland scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Sara Acosta led off with a single and junior Vangie Galindo reached on a fielder's choice that got Acosta. Next, junior Bree Hanafin homered over the right field wall to score the only runs of the game.
Acosta, Hanafin and senior Marisha Branson each had a hit in the game.
The Hokie's only two hits came in the second and seventh innings.
