COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Six Terps combined for 41 kills as the Maryland volleyball team snapped NC State's 13-game winning streak and defeated the Wolfpack in straight sets 25-18, 25-18, 25-21. The Terrapins (8-7) rebounded from Friday's loss to North Carolina to improve to 2-1 in the ACC.
Sophomore Mary Cushman led the Terps in kills (12) for the second time in three matches and tied a season high with nine digs. Freshman Adreene Elliott continued her strong play. The Winston-Salem native finished with eight kills for the fourth straight match and a .333 attack percentage. Junior Caitlin Adams recorded a match-high five blocks and Maryland had 12 as a team.
I thought today we were as organized with our blocking scheme and defensive [scheme] as we've been all year," said head coach Tim Horsmon. "I like how we competed today."
Senior Maddi recorded two kills early in the first set to push the Terps lead to 10-6. The two teams would trade points until a NC State error forced the Wolfpack to take a timeout. NC State scored five of the next six points to cut the Maryland lead to one at 16-15. The set would remain tight until Adams drilled a kill and recorded a service ace to give the Terps a 22-18 lead. With the set in the balance, Elliott, junior Remy McBain and Cushman recorded three consecutive kills to win the set for Terrapins.
With the Terps leading 15-12 in the second set, Elliott smashed a kill and sophomore Sarah Harper recorded an ace as part of a three-point Maryland run. NC State cut the Maryland lead to 20-17, but the Wolfpack would commit errors on four of the next five points to give the Terps set point. Elliott closed out the set with a kill to put the Terrapins up 2-0. The Maryland defense forced the Wolfpack into six attacking errors during the second set to go with five service errors.
NC State cut the Maryland lead to 18-16 late in the final set. The Terps scored the next five points including three kills by Cushman to extend their lead to seven points. An attack error by the Wolfpack gave the Terrapins match point. NC State fought off match point twice, but the Terps' defense forced another Wolfpack error to secure the victory.
