CLEARWATER, Fla. -
The Maryland softball team blanked Illinois, 5-0, Saturday and fell to Boston University, 1-0, in two games in USF's Tournament.
Maryland beat Illinois behind hits from Kelly Trimble, Kathy McLaughlin and Bree Hanafin, and two from Vangie Galindo.
The Terps scored four of their runs in the top of the first. With two runners on, Nikki Maier reached on an error to score two runs. Then, Maier and Candice Beards noth scored off an Illini error.
Maryland scored its fifth run in the top of the sixth when Galindo singled down the right field line to bring one in.
Freshman Kaitlyn Schmeiser started in the circle against the Illini. She pitched 6.0 shutout innings with five hits and three strikeouts.
Kendra Knight started the first game allowed just four hits and a run, although it was unearned.
The Terriers took their 1-0 lead after two base hits and a Maryland throwing error.
Maryland will play Florida A&M at 11:15 a.m. Sunday and then an exhibition game vs. the Netherlands at 1:30 p.m.
