The Maryland softball team dropped two games at Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. The Terrapins fell 5-1 in the first game, then battled in a 9-6 loss to the Jackets in the second. Vangie Galindo led the Terps at the plate with four hits.
Maryland (20-16, 0-5 ACC) held a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning of game two, but the Jackets (27-15, 8-3) used a five-run bottom of the second to tie it up and it was a fight from there.
In the top of the first, Nikki Maier was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score one for the Terrapins. Sara Acosta reached on a fielder's choice next to make it 2-0 Terps.
Maryland extended its lead with three runs in the top of the second. Melissa Mancuso and Galindo led off with back-to-back base hits. Two batters later, Bree Hanafin homered to left center field for a three-run shot.
In the bottom of the inning, freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser walked in the first Georgia Tech run with the bases loaded and two outs. Hope Rush hit a three RBI double to left to clear the bases, then Shannon Bear doubles to score her and tie it at five.
Georgia Tech took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Kelsi Weseman led off with a home run to left center.
Maryland tied it up in the top of the fifth. Acosta singled through the left side, then went to second on a wild pitch. Shannon Bustillos brought her in with a two out double to left center to tie it at six all.
The Jackets added three runs in the bottom of the fifth off of three hits to make it 9-6.
In game one, the Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to center by Rush. They added two more in the bottom of the second. Bear led off with a solo home run to right, then Chelsie Thomas scored on a wild pitch.
Maryland got its run in the top of the third when Candice Beards hit an RBI single through the left side to score Kathy McLaughlin from third.
Georgia Tech would add one run in the bottom of the fifth and then two more in the bottom of the sixth when Alysha Rudnik homered to right.
Senior Kendra Knight pitched the complete game and allowed eight hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts.
