Sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher had a career-high 18 kills and sophomore Mary Cushman tallied her first double-double of the season for the Maryland volleyball team, but the Terps (3-1) lost to Seton Hall, 3-1 (25-20, 26-28, 25-22, 26-24), in their first game of the Maryland Invitational Friday night at Comcast Pavilion.
Cushman finished with 13 kills and 14 digs, while senior Remy McBain was one kill and one dig shy of a triple-double. The Leonia, N.J., native had nine kills, 29 assists and nine digs. Fellow setter, freshman Mackenzie Dagostino notched her third career double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs.
In the effort, junior Sarah Harper recorded 19 digs to move past Lindsay Davey into 10th place all-time at Maryland. Harper's 914 career digs is 65 short of Daune Koester for ninth place.
The first set was marked by several scoring runs by both squads. The Terps raced out to a 5-1 lead over the Pirates behind two kills each from Crutcher and sophomore Adreené Elliott, who finished with a team-high .464 hitting percentage. But Seton Hall scored seven of the next 10 points to tie the set at 8-8.
Crutcher would tally three more kills as part of a 6-3 Maryland run to put the Terps up 14-11. The Pirates fought back once again to take the lead at 15-14 and increased the advantage to 19-15 before the Terps took a timeout.
The break did not slow Seton Hall's momentum as the Pirates scored three of the next four points. Cushman brought the Terps within five points at 24-19, but it would not be enough as the Pirates took the first set 25-20.
The second frame featured 11 ties and six lead changes with the Terps eventually evening up the match at 1-1. After Seton Hall went up 16-13 midway through the set, a kill by Crutcher inched the Terps closer. Elliott and McBain would each add two kills and a service ace by Sarah Harper tied the set at 19-19.
The set remained tight with the Terps denied two consecutive set-clinching points. After a Crutcher kill tied the set at 26-26, a kill by Cushman was punctuated by a Dagostino service ace to clinch the frame.
The third set was another tight affair as the two teams were tied 10 times and the lead changed hands four times. Neither team enjoyed a lead larger than four points. The Terps held a four-point advantage at 16-12, but Seton Hall closed the gap and eventually took the lead at 18-17.
With the match tied at 22-22, the Pirates scored three in a row to win the set.
The final set saw Maryland lead by five points at 15-10, but again Seton Hall did not go away. The Pirates slowly chipped away at the lead before tying the match at 24-24. Seton Hall scored eight of the final 11 points to take the set 26-24 to earn the victory.
