The Maryland volleyball team concludes its pre-conference tournament schedule this weekend at the Blackbird Invitational on the campus of LIU Brooklyn. The Terps will face NJIT, St. John's and the host Blackbirds.
The Terps opening match of the weekend is against St. John's at 2 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the squad opens with NJIT at 12:30 p.m. followed by a matchup against LIU Brooklyn at 6:30 p.m.
The Terps went 1-2 in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational last weekend at Comcast Pavilion. The Terrapins defeated George Washington 3-0, but dropped matches to Boston College and No. 17 Tennessee.

Scouting the Terps
In the opening match of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational, junior Mary Cushman led the Terps with 14 kills and freshman Mackenzie Dagostino added 19 assists and 16 digs in a 3-1 defeat to Boston College (recap | box score).
Saturday afternoon, Maryland bounced back with a sweep of George Washington (box score). Sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher finished with a match-high 15 kills and sophomore Adreené Elliott had 14 kills on a career-high .619 hitting percentage.
The Terps closed the invitational with a 3-0 defeat to No. 17 Tennessee (recap | box score). Crutcher had a team-high 12 kills and senior Remy McBain tallied 14 assists and 12 digs in the effort.
Through nine matches, Crutcher leads the team with 115 kills and ranks sixth in the ACC. Elliott is right behind Crutcher with 91 kills and a team-best .401 hitting percentage, which ranks eighth in the conference and 32nd nationally.
Behind McBain and Dagostino, the Terps are averaging 12.76 assists per set which is the sixth most in the ACC. McBain is 10th in the conference with 6.24 per set.
Defensively, Elliott and senior Caitlin Adams have combined for 49 total blocks, while as a team the Terps rank fifth in the conference averaging 14.58 digs per set led by junior Sarah Harper's 129.
Scouting the Blackbirds
The Blackbirds went 1-2 at the USF Asics Coca-Cola Invitational last weekend. LIU opened with losses to San Francisco and Cal State Northridge, but closed with a 3-1 victory over La Salle. On Tuesday, the Blackbirds knocked off Hofstra in four sets.
LIU Brooklyn is averaging 12.20 kills per set and is led by Annika Foit with 127 kills. Vera Djuric is the primary setter and has 346 assists.
As a team, LIU Brooklyn is averaging 1.51 service aces per set which ranks 45th nationally.
Defensively, the Blackbirds average 2.21 blocks per set. Ashley and Jessica Rice have 40 and 32 total blocks, respectively.
Scouting the Highlanders
The Highlanders went undefeated in three matches over the weekend at the Fordham Tournament. NJIT took care of Stony Brook and Cornell in five sets, and knocked off the hosts in four. NJIT will play Temple Wednesday evening in Philadelphia.
Janet Snell is the squad's primary hitter with 129 kills followed by Fran Edmondson with 95. Anna Mercado is averaging 6.40 assists per set.
Along the net, Valerie Carroll has 33 total blocks.
Scouting the Red Storm
The Red Storm went 3-1 at home in the Kaiser Classic last weekend. St. John's defeated Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis in three sets, but lost to Idaho St. in four sets in the finale.
St. John's has three players with over 100 kills. Aleksandra Wachowicz leads the squad with 138 and is averaging 3.54 per set. Milica Krstojevic and Karin Palqutova each have 105 kills.
As a team, the Red Storm rank 33rd nationally with a .263 hitting percentage.
Off the serve, St. John's has the 11th-best average in the country. It's averaging 1.77 aces per set led by Palqutova with 17.
What's Next
The Terps begin their ACC schedule in earnest next week. The team travels to Clemson on Friday, Sept. 21 and wraps up the weekend at Georgia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 23.
Head Coach
Tim Horsmon
Tim Horsmon is in his fifth season in charge of the Maryland volleyball team. With the Terps' victory over Villanova on Aug. 24, Horsmon won his 50th career game at Maryland.
Honored Terps
Sophomore Adreené Elliott earned all-tournament team honors for the second time this season. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native finished with 32 kills and a .419 hitting percentage in three matches at the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational. In the win over George Washington, Elliott had a career-high .619 hitting percentage.
Elliott took home MVP honors at the Villanova Classic to open the season. In three matches, she tallied 26 kills and 13 total blocks. Elliott finished the weekend with a .353 hitting percentage.
Junior Sarah Harper and freshman Kamrin Gold joined Elliott on the Villanova Classic All-Tournament team. Harper finished with 49 digs, while Gold tallied 18 kills including 11 against Robert Morris.
With 54 kills at the Maryland Invitational, sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher earned a spot on the Maryland Invitational All-Tournament team. Crutcher leads the Terps in kills with 82.
Record Watch
Junior Sarah Harper moved past Lindsay Davey (908) into 10th all-time in Maryland history in digs against Seton Hall on Aug. 31. With 975 digs, Harper trails Daune Koester by four digs for ninth all-time.
Senior Remy McBain ranks fifth in program history with 2,850 assists. She trails Aimee Huddleston by 720 assists for fourth all-time.
Sophomore Adreené Elliott is close to a spot in the top 10 in all-time hitting percentage. Elliott is currently hitting .285 for her career. Katie Usher sits at 10th all-time with a .288 hitting percentage.
Elliott is seven solo blocks shy of moving past Carey Brennan into 10th in program history. Elliott has 43 career solo blocks.
Fresh Faces
The Terps welcomed seven newcomers to the squad this season. The seven-member class was given highest honorable mention honors by PrepVolleyball.com. The 2012 recruiting class included two top-50 student-athletes in Mackenzie Dagostino and Kelsey Hrenbenach.
