Behind 18 kills from sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher and a double-double from senior Remy McBain the Maryland volleyball team defeated Virginia 3-1 (25-27, 25-14, 25-22, 25-19) Sunday at Comcast Pavilion.
After knocking down a career-high 26 kills against Virginia Tech Friday, Crutcher continued her strong offensive form with 18 kills and added a career-high 19 digs for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore Adreené Elliott aided the attack with 11 kills of her own on .400 hitting.
McBain finished with her fifth double-double of the season. The Leonia, N.J., native had a career-best 13 kills along with 14 assists and eight digs.
Freshman Mackenzie Dagostino did a splendid job running the Terrapin offense. Dagostino tallied her team-high sixth double-double of the season with a career-high 35 assists and 11 digs.
Defensively, the Terps stifled the Cavalier attack with 77 digs led by junior Sarah Harper with a season-best 21.
Maryland opened the match on a 5-1 run behind two kills from Crutcher and one from McBain. The Cavs responded by scoring six of the next eight points to the tie set. The opening set remained relatively tight until Virginia gained a two-point advantage at 16-14, which forced a Maryland timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Cavaliers added a service ace and a kill to increase their lead to four points. The Terps cut the Cavaliers lead to two points at 23-21 after a kill from Crutcher and an assisted block from Dagostino and sophomore Catie Coyle. Virginia went up 24-21 on the next point and looked to seal it, but Maryland scored three consecutive points punctuated by a kill from freshman Emily Fraik. The Terps fought off a second set point at 25-24, but eventually relented as the Cavaliers won the set 27-25.
Maryland controlled the second set and finished the frame with a .423 hitting percentage. Crutcher and Elliott each had three kills and Fraik had two blocks and a service ace to lead the Terps to a 25-14 win.
The Terps jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but saw it shrink to 9-7. Maryland then scored six of the next eight points to seize the set. At 17-12, Coyle added her third kill of the match followed by a service ace from McBain to force a Virginia timeout. Virginia did not threaten again as the two team headed to the intermission tied at one.
Elliott was the focal point of the Maryland attack in the third set. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native had five kills while McBain added four as the Terps won the third set 25-22.
Maryland again started quickly by scoring five of the first seven points in the third set. But Virginia once again responded, as the Cavs rallied to tie the frame at 8-8. Fraik sparked a 4-0 run by knocking down her second kill of the set and the Terps seized the momentum.
The Terps increased the lead to 17-12 capped by consecutive kills from McBain. With the Terrapins in control at 22-17, the Cavaliers mounted a charge and cut the deficit to 23-21. Maryland called timeout and earned set point with another McBain kill. Virginia's Tori Janowski served into the net at 24-22 to clinch the set for Maryland.
Unlike the previous three sets, the fourth set was tight early. Maryland gradually increased its lead to 13-7 causing Virginia to use a timeout. The Cavaliers remained within striking distance before Crutcher knocked down a kill and the Terps' defense forced a Virginia error to increase its lead to 20-13.
Four consecutive points by the Cavs cut the lead to three, but Fraik ended the rally with her sixth kill of the match. Fraik added two more kills before it was over as Maryland won the set 25-19.
