Junior Mary Cushman had a team-high 14 kills and freshman Mackenzie Dagostino notched her fourth double-double of her young career, but Boston College outlasted the Terps (4-3, 0-1 ACC) 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 16-25, 25-22) in the ACC opener for both teams Friday night at Comcast Pavilion.
Sophomore Adreené Elliott joined Cushman with double-digit kills. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native finished with 11 kills on a match-high .429 hitting percentage. Dagostino continued her solid play with 19 assists and a career-high 16 digs.
The two teams engaged in a tug-a-war opening set which featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes. Neither team enjoyed a lead larger than two points until the Terps pulled ahead at 10-7 following an error by the Eagles.
Boston College answered with a 5-1 run to lead 12-11, which quickly evaporated on the next point. The set remained back-and-forth until freshman Kamrin Gold added two of her five first set kills to give Maryland a 19-16 advantage.
Maryland grew its lead to four points at 22-18 after another Boston College error. But the Eagles used a 7-1 run to end the first set and secure a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles took control of the second set early. Leading 4-3, Boston College used a 6-3 run to put some distance between itself and the Terps. Maryland closed the gap to three points on three occasions, but would not get any closer.
An 8-2 run by Boston College midway through the second set sealed it for the visitors. The Eagles went on to win the second frame 25-14.
After intermission, the Terps played with renewed energy. Leading 8-7, Cushman sparked a 6-0 Maryland run with her first kill of the set from a Dagostino feed. Gold added two kills, sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher added one, senior Remy McBain picked up a service ace and Cushman punctuated the run with another kill to put the Terps in front 14-7.
The Terps did not allow the Eagles to comeback this time and won the set 25-16.
After a kill by Elliott, Maryland scored the next four points to lead 7-3 early in the fourth set. Following an error by Boston College, the Terps stretched their lead to 13-8 which forced the Eagles to take a timeout. BC responded with eight of the next 10 points to go up 17-15.
Consecutive kills by McBain tied the match at 19 and an Eagle error put Maryland ahead. The teams exchanged the next few points to bring the set to a 22-22 deadlock. The Eagles scored three in a row to win the set and the match.
The Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational continues tomorrow. The Terps take on local rival George Washington at 1:30 p.m. followed by a match-up with No. 16 Tennessee at 7:30 p.m.
