#22 Terps Fall at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif No. 3 Jimmy Sheptock notched a major decision victory, but the No. 22 Maryland wrestling team fell to Stanford on criteria three Saturday afternoon at the Burnham Pavillion.

The Terps (3-1, 0-0 ACC) led the Cardinal (4-0, 0-0 Pac 12) going into the final match, but No. 3 Ryan Mango defeated Tyler Goodwin by decision to tie the match at 16-16. Stanford would take the match by virtue of having more total match points (63-57), with a final score of 17-16.

The match started well for the Terps, with sophomore Shyheim Brown notching an easy decision over Peter Russo.

Stanford controlled the match in the middleweights, scoring wins at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. Jim Wilson highlighted that run with a 15-2 major decision win over Josh Snook.

Tony Gardner pulled some points back for the Terps with a gritty overtime win against Zach Nevills at 174. That victory sparked a Maryland run. Sheptock, No. 8 Christian Boley and No. 7 Spencer Myers all scored victories that helped put the Terps up 16-10.

Stanford tied the match and ultimately took the overall win with success at the lower weight classes. No. 19 Evan Silver took care of Billy Rappo, rolling to a decision victory. Tyler Goodwin put in a solid performance against Mango, but fell to the Stanford standout, 12-8.

“Stanford did a good job controlling the pace of the matches,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “We have to get better in a few areas, but it's still early and we have time.”

Maryland returns to action tomorrow in tournament competition. Select wrestlers will be in Fresno for the Roadrunner Open, while others will compete in Raleigh at the Wolfpack Open.

Notes:

The Terrapins also had competitors in actions in Ames, Iowa at the Cyclone Open. Geoffrey Alexander continued his strong run of form, winning his second tournament title of the season at 133 pounds. The junior defeated Matt Manley of Missouri in the final by decision. Justin Alexander also competed, taking three matches at 149 pounds.
