Terps Win Series Finale at #25 Virginia, 4-2

March 10, 2013

Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Maryland scored two runs in the first inning and four Terrapin pitchers made the lead hold up to defeat No. 25 Virginia on Sunday at Davenport Field in the series finale between the two squads. The Terps (10-5, 1-2 ACC) two-run victory was the first loss of the season for the Cavaliers (14-1, 2-1 ACC).

Maryland used timely hitting and received solid work from the bullpen to secure the win. Blake Schmit and Charlie White each recorded two hits. LaMonte Wade hit his second triple of the season and finished with two RBI. Wade drove in four runs during the series, the most of any Terrapin hitter.

White continued to be aggressive on the bases this weekend. After two stolen bases yesterday, White swiped another Sunday to increase his ACC-leading total to 18.

Maryland's Sunday starter, Alex Robinson, made it 2-2/3 innings allowing one run and striking out two. Kevin Mooney relieved Robinson midway through the third inning. Mooney pitched 2-1/3 innings of scoreless baseball to earn the win.

Mooney turned it over to Jake Stinnett. Stinnett earned the two-inning save, his second save of the season.

Just like game one of the series, the Terps scored in their first at bat. The first three Maryland hitters reached base to begin the game. White singled up the middle, while Jordan Hagel reached on an error and K.J. Hockaday was hit by a pitch.

With the bases loaded. Kyle Convissar hit a slow roller to first base to plate White for Convissar's team-leading 14th RBI of the season. The next batter, Wade, drove in his third run of the series after grounding out to second to score Hagel. It gave the Terps a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.

Virginia's starting pitcher Nick Howard held the Terrapin offense off the scoreboard for the next four innings, but Maryland struck for a run in the sixth. After the first two batters of the inning were sent down on strikes, Wade tripled to left center scoring Convissar from first to put the Terrapins back up by two at 3-1.

Maryland added another run in the seventh on a squeeze bunt by White, which scored Schmit. The Terps used their fourth pitcher of the afternoon in the eighth and turned it over to Jake Stinnett.

Maryland returns home on Tuesday for a doubleheader with Marist. First pitch is set for noon.
