Rupp On Hulse: "Justin has had great success, and this fall he's shown the ability to command the slider he worked on all of last year. With the development of that pitch, he's going to be really tough to hit, especially for right-handed batters. His changeup has also developed as a pitch to attack lefthanders with. He'll be one of the go-to guys in the late innings."
As a Junior (2004): Broke the Maryland single-season record with a team-high 28 appearances and was the only Terrapin pitcher with at least 10 appearances in conference play ... had a team-leading five saves ... those five saves were the fifth-most single season saves in school history and tied him for fifth in the ACC in 2004 ... only gave up more than one run in two of his 28 appearances and kept his ERA at 3.21 or below all season ... finished the season among the Terps' leaders, posting a 3.18 ERA ... held hitters to a .262 average and only gave up eight extra-base hits all year ... had two, two-inning saves and picked up a win after pitching two scoreless innings in a 2-1 Maryland victory over James Madison (4/27) ... averaged 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings, but did not qualify for the ACC leader board ... Duke's Tim Layden led the conference with 10.00 K's per nine ... picked up a win and two saves in his last three appearances of March (3/27-3/31) ... got his first win of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings versus Duke (3/27), gave up no runs and struck out two in 1.1 innings to pick up a save against Virginia Commonwealth (3/30) and struck out four in a two-inning save against Delaware (3/31) ... worked three innings in two ACC Tournament games, striking out three and giving up one earned run (5/25-27).
As a Sophomore (2003): Made 11 appearances in his first season as a
Terp ... allowed four runs in four innings in first career start (April
30) ... one of five pitchers who combined on a five-hit shutout of
New York Tech (April 5) ... had scoreless innings against ACC opponents
Wake Forest (March 16) and Virginia (March 28) ... notched
his first win as a Terp, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out seven
in relief against UMBC (March 4).
At Gardner-Webb: True freshman in 2002 ... named first-team
Division I All-Independent as a starting pitcher (12 teams played
as Division I Independents) ... posted a 6-4 record with 5.32 ERA in
66.0 innings of work ... second on the team with 55 strikeouts ...
worked 7.2 innings against SEC power Georgia and fanned 10 batters
to lead GWU to a 5-3 victory ... only shutout came in 6.0 innings
of work against Limestone ... struck out five or more batters
in four different games.
