COLLEGE PARK, Md. - David Kabelik scored two goals as the Maryland men's soccer team pushed its winning streak to six straight with a 5-2 rout of Hartwick Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.
Kabelik (2), Mael Corboz, Tsubasa Endoh and Dan Metzger all scored for Maryland (9-5-2, 3-2-1 Big Ten), which has surrendered a mere four goals in its current winning streak.
The Terps picked up right where they left off from a three-goal showing against Santa Clara last Saturday. Corboz gave the Terps a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute with a great individual effort after a chipped ball from Mikias Eticha. The junior connected on a top-shelf strike from 10 yards for his team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Kabelik followed with a score of his own about five minutes later. The junior grabbed a ball from Jereme Raley down the near sideline and quickly turned and fired for a beautiful 18-yard blast at 34:22 for a two-goal cushion at the half.
Endoh pushed the lead to three with a goal in the 67th minute. The junior linked up with a terrific pass assist from Jake Areman to set up a one-on-one opportunity against Hartwick goalkeeper Tom Buckner.
An aggressive offense and steadfast defensive effort allowed a mere one shot by Hartwick through the game's first 72 minutes but a breakdown near the top of the box led to a long assist by Chris Walter to Marc Berry for a Hawk goal at 72:18. The Hawks picked up another goal to shrink Maryland's lead to one with 82:37 to play. After a Jeroen Meefout at the top of the box, Ross MacKinnon connected on the ensuing free kick for a 3-2 match.
The Maryland offense wasn't quite through yet, however. Kabelik followed with his second goal of the match in the 87th minute with a score through traffic from eight yards off an Endoh assist.
Metzger finished the Terrapin scoring with a penalty kick tally with 14 seconds remaining in the contest for a 5-2 final.
“It feels good to get the victory and come out of it in good health. We knew this was going to be a difficult game, sandwiched between Santa Clara and Ohio State,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I thought we had moments in the game where we were very good but we also had some lapses and we will learn from that. We've already talked about filing this game away and looking at the positives we did have today. We scored some goals and had some good movement against a team who is highly-competitive.”
Maryland celebrates its senior class at the final regular season home game of the year when the Terps welcome Ohio State for a 7 p.m. tilt Saturday at Ludwig Field.
