Terps Roll Past Eagles on Senior Night

COLLEGE PARK, Md - The Maryland wrestling team finished off its home slate with a victory over American, 23-9, on senior night at Comcast Pavilion Sunday.

Terp senior wrestlers Danny Orem, Ty Snook, No. 1 Jimmy Sheptock, No. 8 Christian Boley, Carl Buchholz and manager Nicole Notardonato were honored in a ceremony prior to the match. Buchholz punctuated the evening with a thrilling victory at heavyweight.

“The guys wrestled well. As a coach, you always look at the things your guys can improve on, but it's really nice to finish off our home season this way,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. Senior day is always bittersweet. This was my first recruiting class, and to see them come through is great.”

The Eagles got on the board first at 125 pounds behind No. 7 David Terao. The 2013 NCAA qualifier jumped on Paul O'Neill from the start with two first period takedowns and survived a late O'Neill surge to secure an 8-6 decision victory.

At 133 pounds, Tyler Goodwin fell to Esteban Gomez-Rivera. Shyheim Brown got the Terps on the board, using two takedowns, one in the first and one in the third, to lock up an easy victory over Tom Page.

Frank Goodwin finished his impressive weekend with a major decision victory over Mark Cirello at 149 pounds. John Boyle put the Eagles back in front with a 5-3 win over Orem at 157.

Josh Snook gave the Terps a lead they would not relinquish at 165 pounds, scoring a dominant 6-0 decision over Cristian Messaya. Brother Ty followed with a win in his final home dual in a Maryland singlet, getting past Keithen Cast, 5-2.

Sheptock followed his classmate with a 10-4 major decision over Jason Grimes. The top-ranked Sheptock finishes his Maryland career undefeated in home dual matches.

At 197 pounds, Christian Boley saluted the Comcast Pavilion crowd for the final time after a 10-4 decision over Brett Dempsey. Buchholz then finished off the night, defeating Blake Herrin, 5-1, and notching his first dual win of the season.

The Maryland senior class produced 53 dual wins, two ACC Championship titles, four individual ACC titles and an All-American.

The Terps end their season with a short trip to George Mason this Thursday. Wrestling is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
