PALO ALTO, Calif - Sophomore Lindsey Schmeiser went 3-for-6 with two runs scores and junior Shannon Bustillos was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs as the Maryland softball team fell to No. 2 Washington and Long Beach State Thursday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Terrapins return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET with a bout against No. 13 Stanford.
Game 1 - #2 Washington 11, Maryland 0
The Terrapin offense was held scoreless by undefeated Washington, 11-0, in their opening game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Huskies jumped on Maryland from the outset with a trio of runs to take the early 3-0 advantage. The Terps responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the frame with a two out rally, but Washington managed to force a Kylie Datil popout.
After tacking on another run in the second, Washington pulled away with four runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a commanding 11-0 lead.
Maryland's comeback efforts were to no avail as it would never do better than its bases loaded first inning.
Game 2 - Long Beach State 11, Maryland 5
The Maryland softball team overcame a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead, but Long Beach State rallied to win the second game of the day, 11-5.
L. Schmeiser, Bustillos and Datil combined for six hits, five RBIs and three runs in the effort.
After taking an early 1-0 lead following a fielding error by the Terps, LBSU doubled its lead in the fourth with a solo home run.
The freshman Datil cut Maryland's deficit in half, 2-1, with a clutch single in the bottom of the fourth. The 49ers answered right back in the following inning, however, plating two runs to take a 4-1 advantage.
Maryland fired back with its strongest inning of the day, as L. Schmeiser and Bustillos teamed up for back-to-back doubles. Datil then delivered again with a bloop single to score Bustillos and give the Terps a 5-4 lead.
The 49er offense doused the Terrapin rally, however, as it scored seven runs over the final three innings to secure the 11-5 win.
Junior Kaitlyn Schmeiser had a strong outing in the circle, striking out four batters and allowing three earned runs in five innings of work.
