Terps Fall in Doubleheader Saturday

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.Shannon Bustillos connected on her second home run of the season as the Maryland softball team dropped a pair of games to Boston College Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Maryland and Boston College meet tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for the third and final game of the series.

Game two – Boston College 4, Maryland 2

Boston College overcame a Bustillos two-run blast with a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to down Maryland, 4-2, in the nightcap Saturday.

Bustillos opened the game with a two-run blast over the left field fence to put the Terrapins ahead in the first inning, 2-0.

The Terps then used strong pitching from Kaitlyn Schmeiser and a pair of outstanding defensive plays to hold the Eagles scoreless through the middle innings. Erin Pronobis made a great diving catch in the third, while Amanda McCann robbed an Eagle home run in the fifth.

Maryland's good fortunes came to an end in the sixth, however, as Boston College totaled four of their five hits in the game to score four runs. A costly error by the Terrapin infield allowed two runs to score, before the Eagles added two more runs for a 4-2 advantage.

K. Schmeiser allowed just two earned runs in 6.0 innings of work, striking out five batters.

Game one – Boston College 8, Maryland 0

Boston College jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as it defeated Maryland, 8-0, in the first game of the day.

The game was never in doubt for the Eagles, who used five hits in the first inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead early. Jordan Weed did the bulk of the damage with a three-run homer to right center field.

Boston College then added another run in the fourth with a solo shot by Tory Speer.

The Terrapin offense struggled to get things going offensively, with McCann, Kylie Datil and Pronobis tallying the lone hits of the game.

K. Schmeiser struck out five batters and allowed just two runs in 3.2 innings of relief work.
